Which filters should I use?

The paper filter must match the V60 dripper you are using – not the serving carafe itself.

If, for example, you use a V60-03 dripper, you must use V60-03 paper filters.

If you use a V60-02, you must use V60-02 filters.

This is important because the sizes 01, 02, and 03 have different dimensions.

Which coffee is good for Hario V60?

There is no specific type of coffee bean that must be used for V60.

However, pour-over is a brewing method where the coffee's aroma and origin characteristics often emerge clearly.

Therefore, light-roasted coffees are popular for V60, especially if you want to experience fruitiness, freshness, and more distinct characteristics from the individual coffee.

Medium-roasted coffee can be a good choice if you want more balance between origin character, sweetness, and body.

Darker roasts can also be used if that is the flavor profile you prefer.

The most important thing is not to choose coffee based on a rule of what one "should" use for V60, but to find the flavor you prefer yourself.

Grind size for larger V60 brews

A medium to medium-fine grind size is often a sensible starting point for V60, but there is no single precise setting that works on all coffee grinders.

For larger brews, you use more coffee and water, and this can change the flow through the coffee bed.

Therefore, it may be necessary to adjust the grind size if you go from, for example, a 300 ml brew to a significantly larger portion.

If the water runs through the coffee very slowly, you can try a slightly coarser grind.

If the flow is very fast and the coffee seems thin or sharp, you can try grinding slightly finer.

Preferably, change one variable at a time.

With your own coffee grinder, it becomes much easier to adapt the grind size to both the coffee bean and the size of the brew.

Serving carafe or directly into the cup?

For a small V60 brew, the dripper can often be placed directly over the cup.

When you brew larger amounts, a serving carafe becomes more practical.

There is also another advantage.

When the entire brew is collected in one carafe, the coffee can be mixed slightly before serving.

This can be relevant because the coffee that runs through the filter early in the brew does not necessarily have the exact same concentration as the coffee that comes out last.

A gentle movement of the serving carafe before serving can therefore help make the overall brew more consistent.
