Airtight coffee canister for better storage of coffee beans
A good coffee canister helps protect coffee beans from air, light, moisture, and major temperature fluctuations during daily storage.
The MiiR coffee canister combines a stainless steel container with an adjustable internal lid that can be pressed down against the coffee. When the lid is pressed down, the amount of air around the coffee beans is reduced.
This makes MiiR an interesting choice if you are looking for a vacuum coffee canister, an airtight container for coffee, or simply a practical coffee bean container for the kitchen.
The container can be used for both whole coffee beans and ground coffee and holds approximately the content of a standard 340-gram bag of coffee.
Why store coffee in an airtight canister?
Coffee changes continuously after roasting.
When coffee beans are exposed to oxygen, aromatic compounds gradually begin to change. Light, heat, and moisture can also affect the quality of the coffee.
That is why it is a good idea to store coffee:
• Dry
• Protected from direct sunlight
• At a stable room temperature
• With limited contact with air
A sealed coffee bag can already be a good solution.
A coffee canister becomes particularly interesting if you want a more practical container on the kitchen counter or want to reduce the amount of air around the coffee as you use it.
How does the MiiR coffee canister work?
MiiR uses an internal, movable lid.
Instead of having a large empty air space above the coffee beans, you can press the internal lid further down so that it is positioned closer to the coffee.
When the lid is pressed down, excess air is pushed out.
It is then locked in place.
When you need to use the coffee again, you release the lid and pull it up.
This also means that the container can be adjusted to the amount of coffee remaining.
As you use the coffee beans, the internal lid can be moved further down.
Is MiiR a true vacuum canister?
The term vacuum coffee canister is used broadly for coffee canisters that attempt to reduce the amount of air around the coffee.
The MiiR model does not use an electric vacuum pump.
Instead, it has an internal accordion-like lid that is pressed down, pushing out excess air before the canister is sealed tight.
It is therefore more accurate to describe it as an airtight coffee canister with an air-displacing inner lid.
This does not change the fact that it is relevant if you are looking for a vacuum coffee canister – but it explains more precisely how it actually functions.
How much coffee can the MiiR coffee canister hold?
MiiR specifies the capacity as a standard American 12 oz bag of coffee.
This corresponds to approximately 340 grams of coffee.
The actual amount may vary slightly depending on the size of the coffee beans and the roast level.
For example, darker roasted coffee beans often have a lower density than lighter roasted beans and therefore take up more space for the same weight.
Therefore, think of 340 grams as a practical guide rather than a precise maximum for all coffee types.
Coffee canister for whole coffee beans
MiiR can be used for whole coffee beans.
This is the use case we think makes the most sense.
If you have a coffee grinder, you can store the coffee as whole beans and only grind the amount you need immediately before brewing.
When coffee is ground, the surface area increases significantly, and the coffee is therefore affected more quickly by the surroundings.
Whole coffee beans combined with proper storage and grinding shortly before brewing are therefore a good starting point.
Can MiiR be used for ground coffee?
Yes.
MiiR specifies the canister itself for both whole coffee beans and ground coffee.
If you don't have a coffee grinder, you can therefore also use the canister for ground coffee.
Here, it is especially important to keep the canister closed between each brewing, because ground coffee has a much larger surface area than whole coffee beans.
Stainless steel coffee canister
The MiiR coffee canister itself is made of 18/8 stainless steel.
An advantage of an opaque container is that the coffee beans are not exposed to direct light through the sides of the container.
This differentiates it from, for example, a transparent glass container sitting out on the kitchen counter.
Stainless steel also provides a robust container intended for repeated use.
Airtight coffee canister or original coffee bag?
You don't necessarily need to transfer your coffee beans to a coffee canister.
A good coffee bag with a valve and resealing also works very well.
However, a separate coffee canister has some practical advantages.
It can be:
• More robust
• Easy to open and close daily
• Nice to have sitting out
• Opaque
• Adjustable, so the air volume around the coffee is reduced
If you use the coffee quickly and keep the original bag properly closed, a coffee canister is not a requirement.
It is a piece of coffee equipment that is primarily about practical and controlled storage.
MiiR or Airscape coffee canister?
MiiR and Airscape are based on a related principle.
Both attempt to reduce the amount of air remaining around the coffee using an internal lid that can be moved down towards the contents.
Therefore, these are not traditional containers with a fixed lid at the very top.
MiiR
MiiR uses an internal accordion-like sealing system that is pressed down, pushing out excess air.
The container is made of stainless steel and has a minimalist design.
Airscape
Airscape also uses a movable inner lid, which is pressed down against the coffee beans and lets excess air escape through a valve.
Both solutions are relevant if you want less empty air space around the coffee.
The choice between them therefore depends on, among other things, size, design, operation, and personal preference.
Vacuum canister or ordinary coffee tin?
An ordinary coffee tin with a tight-fitting lid can protect the coffee well from the surroundings.
But as the coffee is used, there is more empty space – and thus more air – inside the tin.
A container with a movable inner lid can be moved further down as the coffee quantity decreases.
That is the most significant difference.
You therefore do not need to view ordinary coffee tins as bad. A good, tight-fitting lid is already important.
MiiR adds the ability to also reduce the volume above the coffee.
Should coffee beans be stored completely without oxygen?
No, and it is worth nuance.
Freshly roasted coffee beans release carbon dioxide themselves after roasting.
The purpose of good coffee storage is therefore not necessarily to create a laboratory-like, completely oxygen-free environment.
For ordinary home use, it is more practically about limiting unnecessary exposure to:
air, moisture, heat, and light.
This is also one of the reasons why many coffee bags have a one-way valve.
Should coffee beans be stored in the dark?
It is a good idea to protect coffee from direct light.
If the coffee is on a kitchen counter, an opaque container is therefore practical.
MiiR's stainless steel construction means that light does not penetrate through the sides of the container.
Nevertheless, keep the container away from direct sun and strong heat sources.
Where should the coffee canister be kept?
An ordinary kitchen cupboard or a spot on the kitchen counter away from direct sun and heat is usually fine.
Avoid, for example, placing it:
right next to a hot oven
on top of an espresso machine that gets very hot
or in direct sunlight through a window.
Stable room temperature is a good starting point.
Should coffee be stored in the refrigerator?
For coffee that you use daily, we generally do not recommend the refrigerator.
When a container is repeatedly taken from a cold refrigerator into a warm room, the temperature difference can create problems with moisture and condensation.
A sealed container at a stable room temperature is much simpler for the coffee you use regularly.
Can coffee be frozen?
Yes, coffee can be frozen if you want to store it for a longer period.
However, that is a different type of storage than the daily coffee on the kitchen counter.
If you want to freeze coffee beans, it is a good idea to divide them into smaller, sealed portions so you don't repeatedly open and close the same container.
The MiiR coffee canister should not be used in the freezer, as the manufacturer specifically advises against this.
How long do coffee beans stay fresh?
There is no single specific day when coffee beans suddenly go from fresh to old.
Coffee changes gradually.
How quickly you notice the difference depends on, among other things:
• Roast level
• Coffee type
• Storage
• Brewing method
• How often the packaging is opened
• Your own taste preferences
Espresso, for example, may behave differently with very fresh coffee than filter coffee.
Therefore, good storage is best viewed as a way to limit unnecessary impact on the coffee – not as a method that stops the coffee's development completely.
How fresh should coffee be?
Very fresh coffee is not automatically better coffee.
After roasting, coffee beans release carbon dioxide, and many coffees benefit from a resting period before brewing.
This applies especially to espresso.
At Brændeholm Risteri, we roast coffee several times a week, and the coffee can develop in the period after roasting.
A good coffee canister is therefore not about "freezing time," but about giving the coffee proper conditions during storage.
How to use the MiiR coffee canister
Use is simple:
- Place whole coffee beans or ground coffee in the container.
- Place the internal lid on top of the coffee.
- Press the inner lid down so that excess air is pushed out.
- Lock the lid in place.
- When you need to use the coffee, the lid is released and pulled up.
- After use, the lid is pressed down again to the current coffee amount.
Avoid overfilling the container.
The internal lid must have room to function correctly.
How is the MiiR coffee canister cleaned?
MiiR recommends hand washing.
It is especially important to be aware of the internal accordion lid.
The manufacturer recommends that this part be wiped with a damp cloth and not submerged in water, rinsed through, or placed in the dishwasher.
Let all parts dry completely before filling the container with coffee again.
This is important because moisture does not belong with dry coffee beans.
Can the coffee canister go in the dishwasher?
We do not recommend the dishwasher.
MiiR recommends hand washing and has specific cleaning instructions for the internal seal.
Therefore, follow the manufacturer's instructions rather than treating the canister like an ordinary steel tin.
Can it be used for anything other than coffee?
It is developed as a coffee canister, and that is also the use case we focus on.
If you want to use it for other dry goods, you should be aware of odors and residues.
Coffee easily absorbs aroma from the surroundings.
If the container is later to be used for coffee again, products with a very strong scent are therefore not necessarily ideal.
Is a vacuum coffee canister necessary?
No.
You can make excellent coffee without a special coffee canister.
If your coffee comes in a good resealable bag and you use it relatively quickly, the bag can be an excellent storage solution.
A MiiR coffee canister makes the most sense if you want:
• A fixed container for the coffee
• Protection from light
• Robust stainless steel construction
• A movable inner lid
• Less air volume around the coffee
• A simple system without an electric pump
It is thus not a requirement for good coffee – but a practical piece of coffee equipment for the coffee you have already invested in.
What size coffee canister should I choose?
It is an advantage to choose a container that fits roughly the amount of coffee you normally have open.
If you buy coffee in small bags, you don't need a very large container.
The MiiR model is dimensioned for approximately a 12 oz bag, corresponding to about 340 grams of coffee.
This fits well for ordinary home use, where you typically have one bag of coffee open at a time.
MiiR coffee canister for freshly roasted coffee beans
When you buy freshly roasted coffee beans, it also makes sense to think about how they are stored after the bag is opened.
At Brændeholm Risteri, we roast coffee several times a week at our own coffee roastery on Funen.
You can either store the coffee beans in the original bag or move them to a coffee canister like MiiR.
The most important thing is that the coffee is stored dry, protected from direct light, and with as little unnecessary contact with air as possible.
