What is a dosing funnel?

A dosing funnel is a ring or funnel that is placed on top of the portafilter's filter basket.

Its purpose is primarily to create a higher edge around the coffee.

This makes it easier to:

• grind directly into the portafilter

pour ground coffee from a dosing cup

work with WDT without pushing coffee over the edge

reduce coffee grounds around the coffee station

work with the entire weighed dose of coffee

The dosing funnel does not distribute the coffee for you and does not replace a tamper.

It simply makes the first steps of your espresso workflow easier and cleaner.

Magnetic dosing funnel

All dosing funnels in our current assortment are magnetic.

Small magnets help keep the funnel in place on the portafilter while the coffee is being dosed and distributed.

This can be particularly practical during WDT because the funnel does not move as easily while the needles are being moved through the ground coffee.

However, a magnetic funnel is not automatically compatible with all portafilters.

Diameter and construction must still fit your setup.

Therefore, always check the information in the individual product description before ordering.

Which size dosing funnel should I choose?

Size is the most important thing to check before purchasing.

Dosing funnel 51 mm

A 51 mm dosing funnel is intended for compatible smaller portafilters and filter baskets.

Do not choose based on the machine brand alone. Check the specific machine and filter basket, as dimensions can vary between models.

Dosing funnel 53 mm

A 53 mm dosing funnel is used for compatible portafilters around this size.

Here too, specific compatibility should be checked before purchasing.

Dosing funnel 51–54 mm

The Barista Space model in our assortment is developed for portafilters within the smaller size range and is marketed as 51–54 mm.

This can be practical if you use a compatible machine in this size class.

Dosing funnel 58 mm

58 mm is a very common size among larger portafilters and professional espresso systems.

If your machine uses a 58 mm portafilter, you should choose a dosing funnel that specifically fits this size and construction.

A 58 mm funnel should not be used on a 51 or 53 mm portafilter – and vice versa.

Is the portafilter size enough to choose the right funnel?

Not always.

A measurement like 51, 53, or 58 mm tells a lot, but the precise fit can also be influenced by the filter basket and the way the funnel is attached.

Therefore, we recommend that you check:

• the size of the portafilter

the filter basket used

the product's compatibility information

whether the funnel is mounted internally or around the edge

whether your grinder needs to be able to grind directly through the funnel

Dosing funnel and WDT

One of the most obvious uses of a dosing funnel is together with WDT – Weiss Distribution Technique.

With WDT, thin needles are moved through the ground coffee to break up clumps and distribute the coffee more evenly through the filter basket.

When you move the needles around in the coffee, coffee grounds can easily be pushed over the edge of the portafilter.

Here, the dosing funnel acts as a raised wall around the filter basket.

A simple workflow can be:

Dose coffee → use WDT with the funnel mounted → remove funnel → tamp → brew espresso

In this way, the dosing funnel and WDT have two different functions.

The funnel keeps the coffee in the basket.

WDT helps with distribution.

Should the dosing funnel be removed before tamping?

As a rule, the funnel should be removed before you tamp, unless the manufacturer specifically indicates that the specific product is designed for something else.

After dosing and any WDT, the funnel is carefully removed.

Then the coffee bed can be tamped with a suitable tamper.

This gives the tamper free access to the entire filter basket.

Dosing funnel directly under the coffee grinder

If your coffee grinder grinds directly into the portafilter, a dosing funnel can be especially practical.

The coffee comes out of the grinder with some spread, and without a funnel, some coffee can hit the edge or end up outside the filter basket.

The funnel provides more height around the basket and helps guide the coffee into the portafilter.

It can be especially useful for larger doses where the freshly ground coffee temporarily fills higher than the edge of the filter basket.

Dosing funnel together with dosing cup

If you use a dosing cup, the funnel can also make the transfer easier.

The ground coffee can be poured from the cup down through the funnel without having to aim precisely for the filter basket's relatively low edge.

It can provide a cleaner workflow, especially if you use single dosing.

You will find several solutions for weighing and transfer under dosing accessories.

Does a dosing funnel provide better espresso?

Not directly.

A dosing funnel does not in itself change the coffee's extraction and cannot compensate for an incorrect grind size, poor distribution, or an inappropriate recipe.

Its most important task is to make the work process cleaner and easier to control.

It can indirectly make it easier to work consistently because you have a better opportunity to keep the entire weighed dose in the filter basket and use WDT without spilling coffee.

But it is a work tool – not a shortcut to good espresso.

Do I need a dosing funnel?

No.

You can easily make espresso without a dosing funnel.

If you can already dose the coffee cleanly and easily into the portafilter, there is not necessarily a problem that needs to be solved.

A funnel becomes especially useful if:

• you often spill coffee around the portafilter

you use WDT

you grind directly into the filter basket

your dose fills high in the basket before distribution

you use a dosing cup

you would like to make puck preparation less messy

It is therefore one of those small pieces of espresso equipment that only makes sense when it solves a specific problem.

Dosing funnel or distributor?

A dosing funnel and a distributor have completely different functions.

The dosing funnel helps keep the coffee in the filter basket.

A distributor or leveler is used to influence the coffee's distribution or surface before tamping.

Therefore, one does not replace the other.

If you primarily experience coffee grounds all over the table, the funnel is the relevant solution.

If the problem is the distribution of the coffee in the basket, you should instead look at your dosing method and possibly a WDT tool.

Dosing funnel or dosing cup?

They also solve different tasks.

A dosing cup is used to hold and transfer coffee.

A dosing funnel is mounted on the portafilter and provides a higher edge around the filter basket.

They can therefore easily be used together.

For example, you can grind into a dosing cup, place the funnel on the portafilter, and then pour the coffee from the cup down through the funnel.

Dosing funnel as part of puck preparation

Puck preparation describes the work with the ground coffee before the espresso is brewed.

A typical workflow can, for example, be:

1. Weigh the coffee

Use a coffee scale if you want to work with a fixed dose.

2. Grind the coffee

The grind size is adjusted according to the espresso's flow and the coffee you are using.

3. Dose into the portafilter

Here, the dosing funnel can help keep the coffee in the filter basket.

4. Distribute the coffee

A WDT tool can be used to work with the distribution.

5. Remove the funnel

When the coffee is distributed, the dosing funnel is removed.

6. Tamp

Use a tamper that fits the filter basket.

7. Brew the espresso

After that, the portafilter is ready for brewing.

You don't need to make the process more complicated than necessary. A stable and repeatable workflow is more important than the number of tools on the coffee table.

Magnetic or standard dosing funnel?

A standard dosing funnel can work fine if it has a stable fit.

The advantage of a magnetic model is primarily that the magnets help keep the funnel in place.

This can be practical during grinding and especially during WDT.

However, magnetic does not automatically mean a better fit.

Size and compatibility are still more important than the magnet function itself.

Which color should I choose?

On some of our dosing funnels, you can choose between different colors.

The color does not affect the taste of the espresso or the basic function of the funnel.

Therefore, choose the variant that best fits the rest of your espresso setup.

Size and compatibility should always be chosen first.

Coffee beans and dosing

The dosing funnel makes the work around the portafilter easier, but the most important raw material is still the coffee.

For espresso, different coffee beans may require different grinder settings and recipes.

When you change coffee, it may be necessary to adjust the grind size, even if the dose and other equipment are unchanged.

Cleaning the dosing funnel

Coffee grounds and fine coffee particles can accumulate on the funnel during use.

Therefore, remove loose coffee grounds after brewing and clean the funnel according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

If the funnel has magnets or other components, you should follow the specific product guide rather than automatically treating all funnels in the same way.

A clean funnel is also less likely to transfer old coffee grounds back into the filter basket.
