What is the Origami Dripper?

The Origami Dripper was developed in Japan for manual pour over coffee.

The name and the characteristic look are inspired by Japanese origami, but the shape also has a practical function.

The 20 vertical ribs create air between the dripper and the paper filter. This leaves room for water flow and makes it possible to actively work with the flow through, among other things, grind size, filter type, and pouring.

Origami is therefore especially interesting if you want to experiment with pour over and have more opportunities to adjust your brewing.

Origami Dripper S or M?

Origami is available in two primary sizes.

Origami S – 1 to 2 cups

The Origami Dripper S is the smaller size and is intended for approximately 1–2 cups.

It is a good fit if you usually brew a single cup or a smaller portion of coffee.

The S model is available both in porcelain and as an Origami Air in resin.

If the majority of your brews are around one cup, S will normally be the most natural choice.

Origami M – 2 to 4 cups

The Origami Dripper M is the larger model and is intended for approximately 2–4 cups.

It provides more room for larger dosages and is therefore relevant if you often brew coffee for multiple people or want more flexibility in brewing size.

M is also available both as a porcelain dripper and in the lighter Air series.

Origami S or M – what should I choose?

First and foremost, choose based on the amount of coffee you usually brew.

If you typically brew one cup, S is an obvious choice.

If you more often brew two or more cups at a time, M provides more room and flexibility.

It is not the case that M automatically brews “better” coffee than S. The sizes are developed for different brewing volumes.

Origami Air or porcelain?

One of the most important decisions is the choice between the classic porcelain dripper and Origami Air.

They are based on the same basic Origami design with the characteristic ribs, but the material makes them different in use.

Origami Dripper in porcelain

The classic Origami Dripper is made of porcelain.

The porcelain model has more weight and a more traditional ceramic look.

It is a good idea to rinse and preheat the dripper with hot water before brewing. That way, both filter and dripper are ready before the coffee is added.

The porcelain models are available in many different colors, so you can choose based on both size and the visual expression you prefer.

Origami Air in resin

Origami Air is made of AS-resin.

The material makes the dripper lighter and more impact-resistant than a porcelain dripper.

Origami also highlights that the resin material absorbs less heat from the brewing water than porcelain, which makes it easier to maintain the temperature during brewing.

Air is therefore an interesting choice if you want a light and practical dripper or if you would like to take your pour over brewer with you to work or on a trip.

Porcelain or Air – which one is best?

There is no one right choice.

Choose porcelain if you prefer the weight, feel, and look of a ceramic dripper.

Choose Origami Air if low weight, robustness, and easy handling mean more.

Both models allow you to work with the same basic Origami principle and different filter types.

Why does the Origami Dripper have 20 ribs?

The 20 vertical ribs are a central part of Origami's construction.

The ribs create distance between the paper filter and the sides of the dripper, so the filter does not lie flush against the dripper over the entire surface.

This allows space for air and water around the filter and supports the flow.

At the same time, the construction makes it possible to use different types of paper filters.

Which filters can be used for the Origami Dripper?

One of Origami's special features is its compatibility with both cone-shaped and wave-shaped paper filters.

This gives you the possibility to change the brewing geometry without buying a new dripper.

Cone-shaped filters

A cone-shaped filter lies lower toward the center of the dripper and provides a deeper bed of coffee.

If you are already familiar with the Hario V60, the filter shape itself will seem familiar.

Wave filters

A wave filter has a flatter bottom and therefore creates a different coffee bed in the Origami dripper.

Origami produces wave filters themselves, which are developed to fit the dripper's 20 ribs.

The difference between the filter types makes it possible to experiment with extraction and taste with the same coffee and dripper.

Origami or Hario V60?

Both Origami and Hario V60 are manual pour over brewers where the pouring technique can influence the brewing.

However, the construction is different.

The Hario V60 has spiral-shaped ribs and one large opening at the bottom and is developed around cone-shaped V60 filters.

Origami has 20 prominent vertical ribs and can be used with both cone- and wave-shaped filters.

V60 is a very established system with a large selection of its own filters, servers, and drippers.

Origami is interesting if you especially want to experiment with different filter geometries in the same dripper.

Both systems can be good choices for manual filter coffee.

Origami or Kalita Wave?

Kalita Wave is developed around a flat-bottomed dripper and wave-shaped filters.

Origami has a different dripper geometry but can also be used with wave-shaped filters.

This gives Origami greater flexibility in the choice of filter because you can also use cone-shaped filters.

If you already have a Kalita Wave system, it naturally makes sense to continue with the appropriate Wave filters.

If, on the other hand, you would like to be able to switch between two different filter shapes in the same dripper, Origami is interesting.

Origami or Hario Switch?

Hario Switch functions differently.

Origami is basically a pour over dripper with free flow.

The Switch has a valve at the bottom which makes it possible to hold the water back and brew with immersion.

Therefore, do not choose based on appearance alone.

Origami is especially suitable for you who want to work actively with classic pour over, while the Switch is interesting if you want to be able to combine pour over with immersion.

Does the Origami Dripper need a holder?

Yes. The Origami dripper itself must be placed stably over the cup or serving carafe.

Therefore, a holder is used that the dripper rests in.

Be aware of whether a holder is included with the specific dripper when you order. On several models, the holder is sold separately.

Origami holder in wood or resin?

Both types have the same basic purpose: to hold the dripper stably over a cup or serving carafe.

The choice is therefore largely about material, appearance, and the solution you prefer in your coffee setup.

The resin holder is light and practical.

The wooden holder gives a more natural look together with the porcelain dripper.

How to get started with Origami

You don't need to start with a complicated recipe.

Start with a fixed amount of coffee and water and a medium grind size as a starting point.

Rinse the paper filter with hot water and at the same time preheat the dripper and cup or serving carafe.

Add the ground coffee and pour the water in a controlled manner over the coffee bed.

Once you have a stable base recipe, you can start changing one parameter at a time.

This can for example be:

• grind size

• water temperature

• pouring speed

• ratio between coffee and water

• filter type

By only changing one thing at a time, it becomes easier to understand why the taste changes.

Which grind size should I use?

A medium grind size is a good starting point for pour over.

However, there is no one correct grinder setting for all Origami recipes.

Filter type, coffee amount, brew size, and pouring technique also affect the flow.

If the water runs through very quickly and the coffee seems thin or underdeveloped, you can try a slightly finer grind size.

If the flow becomes very slow, or the coffee tastes harsh and bitter, a slightly coarser setting may be relevant.

With your own coffee grinder, you can adjust the grind size according to both coffee and recipe.

Use a coffee scale for Origami

A coffee scale makes it easier to keep track of coffee, water, and brewing time.

It is especially useful for pour over because small changes in water volume and pouring can change the result.

The advantage is not that coffee must be made unnecessarily technical.

The advantage is that you can more easily repeat a brew you were satisfied with.

Gooseneck kettle for Origami

A kettle with a controlled pouring spout is a useful tool for Origami.

The narrow spout makes it easier to control both the speed and the placement of the water.

You can start with a regular kettle, but if you want to work more precisely with pour over, a gooseneck kettle is a natural upgrade.

Which coffee beans are suitable for Origami?

Origami can be used with many different coffees.

There is no specific roast level that you must use.

Light-roasted coffee beans

Light-roasted coffee beans can be interesting if you want to experience more fruitiness, freshness, and clear origin character.

Medium-roasted coffee beans

Medium-roasted coffee beans often provide a more balanced combination of sweetness, body, and acidity.

Dark-roasted coffee beans
