Thermos flasks

Thermal carafes for coffee – Hario 600 and 800 ml

A thermal carafe is practical when you want to brew a larger portion of coffee and maintain the temperature longer without leaving the coffee on a hot plate.

At Brændeholm Risteri, you will find Hario thermal carafes in 600 and 800 ml in both black and white. They are particularly suitable for filter coffee and pour over, and Hario has developed the construction so that a V60 dripper can be placed directly on top of the carafe.

This means you can brew the coffee directly into the thermal carafe and serve from the same container afterwards.

If you are instead looking for a smaller insulated container for one person and coffee on the go, you can see our thermal flasks.

What is a thermal carafe?

A thermal carafe is an insulated serving carafe that reduces heat transfer between the drink and the surroundings.

The Hario models in our range use double-walled stainless steel construction.

This helps keep the coffee warm longer than in a standard open glass carafe.

A thermal carafe does not heat the coffee.

Instead, it limits how quickly the temperature drops after brewing.

This is an important difference compared to a coffee machine with a hot plate, where the carafe continues to receive heat after brewing.

Why use a thermal carafe for coffee?

A thermal carafe is especially useful if the coffee is not to be drunk immediately.

This could be, for example, when you are brewing coffee for several people, bringing a carafe to the breakfast table, or would like to be able to have a new cup later without brewing again.

The biggest practical advantage is that the coffee can be kept warm without active heating from a hot plate.

This makes the thermal carafe suitable for both manual filter coffee and other brewing situations where you want to serve the coffee over a longer period.

Hario thermal carafe for V60

Hario has developed their insulated servers so that a Hario V60 dripper can be placed directly on top of the carafe.

You can therefore work with a simple brewing process:

Place the V60 on the thermal carafe.

Insert the paper filter.

Add the ground coffee.

Brew directly into the carafe.

Remove the dripper and close the lid.

Then the coffee can be served directly from the thermal carafe.

You thus avoid brewing in one container and subsequently pouring the coffee into another.

600 or 800 ml thermal carafe?

The most important choice in our current range is the size.

Hario thermal carafe 600 ml

600 ml is a good choice if you normally brew a moderate portion of filter coffee.

The size is practical for, for example, one or two people or smaller V60 brews where you want to serve more than a single cup.

The smaller carafe also takes up less space at the coffee station and on the table.

Hario thermal carafe 800 ml

800 ml provides more capacity and is therefore interesting if you brew larger portions.

This could be for several people, the breakfast table, the office, or guests.

If you regularly brew 600–800 ml of filter coffee at a time, the larger model gives you more leeway.

Therefore, choose the size based on the amount of coffee you actually brew – not just which model holds the most.

How many cups are 600 and 800 ml?

That depends on the size of your coffee cups.

If, for example, you serve about 200 ml of coffee per cup, then:

600 ml equals about three cups.

800 ml equals about four cups.

If you use smaller cups, you will naturally get more servings.

It is therefore more precise to choose a thermal carafe based on milliliters rather than a specific number of “cups”.

Thermal carafe or glass carafe?

A glass carafe and a thermal carafe can both be used for serving filter coffee, but they have different strengths.

A glass carafe makes it easy to see the amount of coffee and is ideal when the coffee is to be drunk relatively quickly.

A thermal carafe provides better insulation and is therefore more relevant if the coffee is to be served over a longer period.

If you brew one portion and drink it immediately, you do not necessarily need a thermal carafe.

If, on the other hand, the coffee is going to sit for 30 minutes, an hour, or longer, the insulation becomes more relevant.

Thermal carafe or hot plate?

A coffee machine with a glass carafe often uses a hot plate to keep the coffee warm.

A thermal carafe works differently.

Here, no continuous heat is added. Instead, the insulation tries to preserve as much as possible of the temperature the coffee already has.

This means you avoid the finished coffee sitting directly on a hot surface.

This is one of the most important reasons to choose a thermal carafe if you often leave a larger portion of filter coffee standing after brewing.

Can you brew directly into the Hario thermal carafe?

Yes. Hario's insulated servers are developed so that a V60 dripper can be placed on top of the carafe.

This makes the thermal carafe particularly interesting if you already use Hario V60.

You can thus use the thermal carafe as both a brewing server and a serving carafe.

If you use a different dripper, you should check whether it stands stable and secure on the opening before you brew directly into the carafe.

Thermal carafe for pour over

A thermal carafe can be practical for pour over, but it is not necessary to brew good coffee.

If you only brew one cup at a time, you can easily brew directly into a cup or standard server.

The thermal carafe becomes especially relevant for larger brews.

If, for example, you brew several cups with V60 and would like to serve them over some time, an insulated server makes more sense.

For the pour over brewing itself, you can also see our selection of kettles and coffee scales.

Thermal carafe for filter coffee

Thermal carafes are not only relevant for manual V60.

They can also be used as a serving carafe for other ready-brewed filter coffee.

If the coffee is not brewed directly into the thermal carafe, it can be poured over afterwards.

The less unnecessary pouring and waiting there is, the simpler the workflow becomes.

If you are looking for the brewer itself, you will find various solutions under coffee brewers.

Should the thermal carafe be preheated?

If you want to reduce the initial temperature drop, you can preheat the thermal carafe before brewing.

This can be done by pouring hot water into the carafe shortly before the coffee is brewed.

Then pour out the water and brew or pour the coffee into the preheated carafe.

Otherwise, a cold metal container will absorb some heat from the hot coffee at the start.

Preheating is not necessary in all situations, but can be useful when temperature preservation is important.

How long does a thermal carafe keep coffee warm?

There is no single precise number of hours that applies to all situations.

Temperature development depends, among other things, on the coffee's starting temperature, how full the carafe is, whether the carafe is preheated, the ambient temperature, and how often the lid is opened.

A thermal carafe should therefore be seen as a way to reduce the temperature drop – not as a guarantee for a specific temperature after a specific number of hours.

If you want the hottest coffee for as long as possible, it typically helps to preheat the carafe and avoid opening it unnecessarily.

Should the thermal carafe be filled completely?

No.

You can easily use an 800 ml carafe for smaller portions.

However, an almost full thermal carafe will generally have a different temperature development than a carafe with only a little bit of coffee in it.

This is another reason to choose a size that roughly fits your normal brews.

If you almost always brew around 400–600 ml, the 600 ml model can be practical.

If you often brew closer to 800 ml, the larger model makes more sense.

Black or white Hario thermal carafe?

The black and white models have the same basic function.

The color is therefore primarily about design and which look you prefer for the coffee station or table.

Choose capacity first.

Then you can choose between black and white.

Thermal carafe for the office

A thermal carafe is practical in an office where several people can take coffee from the same brew.

Instead of leaving a glass carafe on a hot plate, the coffee can be brewed or poured directly into the thermal carafe.

600 ml fits a smaller need, while 800 ml gives a bit more capacity.

If you have a significantly larger coffee consumption, larger professional serving solutions would naturally be more relevant.

Thermal carafe for guests

The thermal carafe is also practical when several people need coffee around the same time.

You can brew the coffee in advance and take the carafe to the table.

This means you don't need to fetch each individual cup directly from the brewing station.

An 800 ml model is particularly relevant when several people are to share the same brew.

What coffee should I use?

The thermal carafe does not place special demands on the coffee beans.

You can use the coffee and roast level you normally prefer for filter coffee.

At Brændeholm Risteri, you will find freshly roasted coffee and coffee beans from our own roastery on Funen.

For manual filter coffee, various lighter and medium roasted coffees can be interesting, but the choice primarily depends on the flavor profile you prefer.

Grind size for filter coffee

The thermal carafe does not affect the grind size you should choose.

The grind is determined by the brewing method.

For V60 and other pour over methods, a different grind size is typically used than for espresso.

A uniform coffee grinder makes it easier to repeat the brewing.

See our selection of coffee grinders if you are missing a grinder for your filter coffee setup.

Thermal carafe, coffee scale, and kettle

If you brew directly into the thermal carafe with V60, it can be part of a simple pour over setup together with:

A V60 dripper.

A coffee scale.

A kettle.

A coffee grinder.

Paper filter.

Freshly ground coffee.

The thermal carafe thus replaces the server – not the rest of the brewing equipment.

See our Hario V60 equipment, coffee scales, and kettles.

Thermal carafe or thermal flask?

The two product groups have different main purposes.

A thermal flask is usually intended for one person and transport.

A thermal carafe is designed to stand on the table and pour several cups from.

Therefore, choose a thermal flask if the coffee is to be taken on the go, and a thermal carafe if you want to brew or serve a larger portion for one or more people.

Cleaning the thermal carafe

Coffee contains oils and fine particles which over time can settle in the carafe and lid.

Therefore, rinse the carafe after use and clean it regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Pay special attention to the lid, pouring mechanism, and gaskets where coffee residues can accumulate.

If the lid can be disassembled, you should follow the manufacturer's guide for correct disassembly and assembly.

Avoid leaving old coffee in the carafe longer than necessary.

Hario thermal carafes at Brændeholm Risteri

At Brændeholm Risteri, you will find Hario thermal carafes in 600 and 800 ml as well as black and white.

Choose 600 ml if you normally brew smaller portions, and 800 ml if you want space for larger brews.

Both sizes are obvious choices together with Hario V60 when you want to brew directly into an insulated server and subsequently serve the coffee from the same carafe.

For the rest of the brewing setup, you will also find coffee scales, kettles, coffee grinders, and freshly roasted coffee.
