How much coffee does the Bialetti Rainbow 3 cups make?
Bialetti Rainbow 3 cups has a capacity of approximately 130 ml of brewed coffee.
The term 3 cups does not mean three standard coffee mugs. Bialetti's size designation is based on small portions of moka pot coffee, which is more concentrated than regular drip coffee.
The 3-cup model is a good fit if you:
- typically brew for one person
- want a smaller portion to share
- use moka pot coffee as a base for a milk-based drink
- prefer a compact moka pot
If you want to brew a very small portion, you can choose the Bialetti Rainbow Yellow 1 cup.
Rainbow – classic moka pot with more color
Bialetti Rainbow is based on the traditional moka pot principle, but sets itself apart from the classic silver models with its bright colors.
The yellow version combines aluminum construction, an ergonomic handle, and Bialetti's safety valve with a more playful look.
This makes it a great choice if you want a simple stovetop coffee maker that also adds a splash of color to the kitchen.
Does Bialetti Rainbow make real espresso?
No.
Even though this type of coffee maker is often called an espresso pot, it does not brew traditional espresso like an espresso machine.
When the water in the bottom container is heated, pressure builds up, pushing the water through the ground coffee and up into the top container.
The result is intense and concentrated moka pot coffee, but the brewing occurs at a lower pressure than classic espresso.
If you want to learn more about dosage, grind size, and brewing technique, you can read our guide to coffee with moka pots.
Can Bialetti Rainbow be used on induction?
Not directly.
Rainbow is made of aluminum and is therefore not directly compatible with induction cooktops.
If you have induction, you can use the Bialetti Induction Plate 13 cm between the induction field and the moka pot.
The induction plate transfers the heat from the induction field to the aluminum pot, making it possible to use the Rainbow on a compatible induction stove.
If you would rather have a moka pot that can be placed directly on induction, you can see our other moka pots.
What grind size should be used?
A medium-fine grind is a good starting point for a moka pot.
The coffee should be:
- finer than regular drip coffee
- coarser than coffee for a traditional espresso machine
- gritty rather than powdery
Fill the filter funnel loosely and evenly with coffee.
The coffee should not be tamped.
If brewing is very slow, or the coffee becomes bitter, you can try a slightly coarser grind.
If the result is thin, you can try a slightly finer one.
A good coffee grinder makes it easier to adjust the grind and replicate a good result.
How to use Bialetti Rainbow
1. Fill the bottom container with water
Fill with water to just below the safety valve.
2. Insert the filter funnel
Place the filter funnel into the bottom container.
3. Add coffee
Fill the filter funnel loosely and evenly with medium-fine ground coffee.
The coffee should not be tamped.
4. Screw the moka pot together
Screw the top and bottom parts securely together.
Avoid using the handle as leverage when tightening or loosening the pot.
5. Place Rainbow on the stove
Use low to medium heat.
On gas, the flame should be kept under the base and not climb up the sides of the pot.
If you have induction, use the Bialetti Induction Plate 13 cm between the induction field and the Rainbow.
6. Remove the pot from the heat
When the coffee has reached the top container, remove the pot from the heat.
Avoid letting it sit and sputter for longer than necessary.
Which coffee beans are suitable for a moka pot?
You can use different roast levels depending on the flavor you prefer.
Medium-roast coffee beans are a good starting point if you want a balance between sweetness, body, and the coffee's character.
If you prefer a more robust and classic flavor profile, you can try dark-roast coffee beans.
You can also experiment with lighter roasts if you prefer more fruitiness and acidity.
Rainbow Yellow 1 or 3 cups?
The choice is mainly about the amount of coffee you normally want to brew.
- approx. 60 ml
- very compact
- for one small serving
Bialetti Rainbow Yellow 3 cups
- approx. 130 ml
- more than double the capacity
- good for a larger serving or sharing
If 60 ml is often too little, the 3-cup model provides more flexibility without becoming a large moka pot.
Before first use
Clean the moka pot thoroughly with water before first use.
Then make a few brews and discard the coffee before using the Rainbow for regular consumption.
At the same time, check that the filter funnel, gasket, filter plate, and safety valve are seated correctly.
Cleaning and maintenance
Let the Rainbow cool down after brewing before opening it.
Remove the coffee grounds and clean the parts gently.
Check regularly:
- the gasket
- the filter funnel
- the filter plate
- the safety valve
Worn or damaged parts should be replaced with spare parts suitable for the model.
