Bialetti Rainbow Green 3-cup – stovetop espresso maker for 130 ml of coffee

The Bialetti Rainbow Green 3-cup combines classic moka pot brewing with a fresh and colorful design.

This compact espresso maker is made of polished aluminum and brews approximately 130 ml of concentrated moka pot coffee. This makes the 3-cup model a great medium size, ideal when 60 ml is not enough, but you don't need a large 6-cup model.

The green Rainbow is perfect for those who want the simple stovetop brewing that Bialetti is known for, but with a more colorful look than the classic silver moka pot.

How much coffee does the Rainbow 3-cup make?

The Bialetti Rainbow 3-cup has a capacity of approximately 130 ml of brewed coffee.

The term 3 cups does not refer to three standard coffee mugs. Bialetti's sizes are based on small portions of moka pot coffee, which is more concentrated than regular drip coffee.

The 3-cup model is particularly suitable if you:

  • typically brew coffee for one person
  • want a slightly larger serving of concentrated coffee
  • want to share a smaller portion between two people
  • use moka pot coffee as a base for a milk-based drink
  • want a compact espresso maker without going all the way down to the 1-cup size

If you need a larger portion, you can choose the Bialetti Rainbow Green 6-cup, which brews approximately 270 ml.

Classic moka pot in green

The Rainbow series is Bialetti's colorful interpretation of the traditional moka pot.

The green edition maintains the simple brewing principle, aluminum construction, ergonomic handle, and safety valve, but gives the pot a more striking visual expression.

This makes it suitable for those who want both a functional coffee maker and a bit more color in the kitchen.

Does the Bialetti Rainbow make real espresso?

No.

Although this type of coffee maker is often called an espresso maker in Danish, it is technically a moka pot.

Water is heated in the lower chamber, after which the pressure forces the hot water through the ground coffee and up into the upper chamber.

The result is an intense and concentrated coffee, but the brewing takes place at a significantly lower pressure than in a traditional espresso machine.

If you need help with coffee amounts, grind size, and brewing technique, you can read our guide to coffee on espresso makers and moka pots.

Can the Bialetti Rainbow be used on induction?

Not directly.

The Rainbow is made of aluminum and is therefore not directly compatible with induction cooktops.

If you have an induction stove, you can use the Bialetti Induction Plate 13 cm between the induction field and the espresso maker.

The induction plate is heated by the induction field and transfers the heat to the aluminum pot.

If you prefer an espresso maker that can be placed directly on induction without an adapter, you can see our other espresso makers.

What grind size should be used?

A medium-fine grind size is a good starting point for a moka pot.

The coffee should be:

  • finer than regular drip coffee
  • coarser than coffee for a traditional espresso machine
  • gritty rather than completely powder-fine

Fill the filter basket loosely and evenly with coffee.

The coffee should not be tamped.

If brewing is very slow or the coffee becomes bitter, you can try a slightly coarser grind. If the coffee is thin and lacks intensity, try a slightly finer one.

A good coffee grinder makes it easier to adjust the grind and achieve consistent results.

How to use the Bialetti Rainbow

1. Fill water into the lower chamber
Fill with water to just below the safety valve.

2. Insert the filter basket
Place the filter basket into the lower chamber.

3. Add coffee
Fill the basket loosely and evenly with medium-fine ground coffee.

The coffee should not be tamped.

4. Screw the espresso maker together
Screw the upper and lower parts together securely.

Do not use the handle as leverage when tightening or loosening the pot.

5. Place the Rainbow on the stove
Use low to medium heat.

On gas, the flame should be kept under the bottom and not go up along the sides of the pot.

If you have induction, place the Bialetti Induction Plate 13 cm between the induction field and the Rainbow.

6. Remove the pot from the heat
Once the coffee has risen to the upper chamber, remove the espresso maker from the heat.

Avoid letting it sit and sputter unnecessarily long.

Which coffee beans are suitable for a moka pot?

The moka pot can be used with many different roast levels.

Medium-roasted coffee beans are a good starting point if you want a balance between sweetness, body, and the character of the coffee.

If you prefer a stronger and more classic flavor profile, you can try dark-roasted coffee beans.

Lighter roasts can also be exciting if you prefer more fruitiness and acidity.

Rainbow Green 3 or 6 cups?

The most important thing is to choose according to the amount of coffee you usually want to brew.

Rainbow Green 3-cup

  • approx. 130 ml
  • compact size
  • good for a smaller portion

Bialetti Rainbow Green 6-cup

  • approx. 270 ml
  • more than double the capacity
  • better for multiple people or several coffee drinks

If you primarily brew for yourself, the 3-cup model will often be the most practical. If you regularly need more coffee, the 6-cup model provides more capacity.

Before first use

Clean the espresso maker thoroughly with water before first use.

Then make a few brews and discard the coffee before using the Rainbow for regular use.

At the same time, check that the filter basket, filter plate, gasket, and safety valve are positioned correctly.

Cleaning and maintenance

Let the Rainbow cool down before opening the pot after brewing.

Remove the coffee grounds and clean the parts gently with water.

Regularly check:

  • the gasket
  • the filter basket
  • the filter plate
  • the safety valve

If a part becomes worn or damaged, it should be replaced with a spare part that fits the model.
