The Rainbow series is made of aluminum and combines Bialetti's well-known brewing principle with bright colors. The red 1-cup model brews approximately 60 ml of concentrated moka pot coffee and is particularly suitable when you only want a small serving.

How much coffee does the Rainbow 1 cup make?

The Bialetti Rainbow 1 cup has a capacity of approximately 60 ml of brewed coffee.

The term 1 cup does not mean a standard coffee mug. Moka pot coffee is more concentrated than drip coffee and is typically served in smaller portions.

The 1-cup model is a good fit for you if you:

  • usually brew just for yourself

  • want a small and concentrated coffee

  • do not want to brew more coffee than necessary

  • prefer a very compact coffee brewer

If you often need a little more coffee, you can choose the Bialetti Rainbow Red 3 cups instead, which brews approximately 130 ml.

Rainbow – classic moka pot with more color

The Bialetti Rainbow is based on the traditional moka pot principle, but the series stands out with its bold colors.

The red model provides a more playful look than the classic silver moka pot, while the construction remains based on aluminum, an ergonomic handle, and Bialetti's safety valve.

This makes the Rainbow an obvious choice if you want a simple stovetop coffee brewer that also stands out a bit in the kitchen.

Does the Bialetti Rainbow make real espresso?

No.

Even though this type of coffee brewer is often called an espresso maker in Danish, it does not brew traditional espresso like an espresso machine.

When the water in the bottom chamber is heated, pressure builds up, forcing the water through the ground coffee and into the top chamber.

The result is an intense and concentrated moka pot coffee, but the brewing occurs at a lower pressure than with classic espresso.

If you need help with dosing, grind size, and brewing technique, you can read our guide to making coffee with a moka pot.

Can the Bialetti Rainbow 1 cup be used on induction?

Not directly.

The Rainbow is made of aluminum and is therefore not inherently compatible with induction hobs.

If you have induction, you can use the Bialetti Induction Plate 13 cm between the hob and the moka pot.

The induction plate transfers heat from the induction zone to the aluminum pot, making it possible to use the Rainbow on a compatible induction stove.

If you would rather have a moka pot that can be used directly on induction, you can see our other moka pots.

What grind size should be used?

A medium-fine grind is a good starting point for a moka pot.

The coffee should be:

  • finer than regular drip coffee

  • coarser than coffee for a traditional espresso machine

  • gritty rather than powder-fine

Fill the filter basket loosely and evenly with coffee.

The coffee should not be tamped.

If the brewing process goes very slowly, or the coffee becomes bitter, you can try a slightly coarser grind.

If the result becomes thin, you can try a finer one.

A good coffee grinder makes it easier to find and repeat the grind size that best suits your coffee beans.

How to use the Bialetti Rainbow

1. Fill the bottom chamber with water
Fill with water to just below the safety valve.

2. Insert the filter basket
Place the filter basket into the bottom chamber.

3. Add coffee
Fill the basket loosely and evenly with medium-fine ground coffee.

The coffee should not be tamped.

4. Screw the pot together
Screw the top and bottom parts firmly together.

Avoid using the handle as leverage when tightening or loosening the pot.

5. Place the Rainbow on the stove
Use low to medium heat.

On gas, the flame must be kept under the base and not go up along the sides.

If you have induction, use the Bialetti Induction Plate 13 cm between the induction zone and the Rainbow.

6. Remove the pot from the heat
Once the coffee has moved into the top chamber, remove the pot from the heat.

Avoid letting it sit and sputter for unnecessarily long.

Which coffee beans are suitable for a moka pot?

You can use different roast levels depending on the taste you prefer.

Medium-roast coffee beans are a good starting point if you want a balance between sweetness, body, and the coffee's character.

If you prefer a stronger and more classic flavor profile, you can try dark-roast coffee beans.

You can also experiment with lighter roasts if you want more fruitiness and acidity.

Rainbow Red 1 or 3 cups?

The choice depends primarily on how much coffee you normally want to brew.

Rainbow Red 1 cup

  • approx. 60 ml

  • very compact

  • suitable for one small serving

Bialetti Rainbow Red 3 cups

  • approx. 130 ml

  • more than twice the capacity

  • better if 60 ml is often too little

If you almost always brew a single small coffee, the 1-cup model is an obvious choice. If you want a little more flexibility, the 3-cup model will typically suit you better.

Before first use

Clean the moka pot thoroughly with water before first use.

Then make the first few brews and discard the coffee before the Rainbow is taken into regular use.

At the same time, check that the filter basket, gasket, filter plate, and safety valve are positioned correctly.

Cleaning and maintenance

Let the Rainbow cool down after brewing before opening it.

Remove the coffee grounds and clean the parts gently.

Check regularly:

  • the gasket

  • the filter basket

  • the filter plate

  • the safety valve

Worn or damaged parts should be replaced with spare parts that fit the model.
