Bialetti Rainbow Red 6 cups – colorful espresso maker for 270 ml of coffee

The Bialetti Rainbow Red 6 cups is a colorful version of the classic Italian moka pot, often referred to in Danish as an "espressokande" (espresso maker).

The Rainbow series is made of aluminum and combines Bialetti's well-known brewing principle with a more playful design. The red 6-cup model brews approximately 270 ml of concentrated moka pot coffee and is perfect for those who want a larger serving of coffee.

How much coffee does the Bialetti Rainbow 6 cups make?

Bialetti states approximately 270 ml of brewed coffee for the Rainbow 6 cups.

The term 6 cups does not mean six regular coffee mugs. Bialetti's size designation is based on small moka pot cups, and the coffee is more concentrated than regular drip coffee.

The 6-cup model is a good choice if you:

  • brew for several people

  • want a larger portion for yourself

  • use moka pot coffee as a base for multiple milk-based drinks

  • find the 1- or 3-cup model too small

Rainbow – classic moka pot in a red design

The Bialetti Rainbow is based on the traditional moka pot principle, but the series stands out with its vibrant colors.

The red model combines an aluminum construction, an ergonomic handle, and Bialetti's safety valve with a more distinctive look than the traditional silver Moka Express.

This makes the Rainbow a great choice if you want both simple stovetop brewing and a coffee maker that adds more color to your kitchen.

Does the Bialetti Rainbow make real espresso?

No.

Even though this type of coffee maker is often called an espresso maker in Danish, it does not brew traditional espresso like an espresso machine.

When the water in the bottom chamber is heated, pressure builds up, pushing the water through the ground coffee and into the top chamber.

The result is an intense and concentrated moka pot coffee, but the brewing takes place at a lower pressure than classic espresso.

If you need help with dosage, grind size, and brewing technique, you can read our guide to coffee with espresso makers and moka pots.

Can the Bialetti Rainbow be used on induction?

Not directly.

The Bialetti Rainbow is made of aluminum and is therefore not directly compatible with induction stovetops.

If you have induction, you can use the Bialetti Induction Plate 13 cm.

The induction plate is designed for Bialetti espresso makers up to 6 cups and transfers heat from the induction zone to the aluminum pot.

If you would prefer an espresso maker that can be used directly on induction, you can see our other espresso makers.

What grind size should be used?

A medium-fine grind is a good starting point for a moka pot.

The coffee should be:

  • finer than regular drip coffee

  • coarser than coffee for a traditional espresso machine

  • gritty rather than powdery fine

Fill the filter funnel loosely and evenly with coffee.

The coffee should not be tamped.

If the brewing process is very slow or the coffee becomes bitter, you can try a slightly coarser grind.

If the result is thin, try a slightly finer grind.

A good coffee grinder makes it easier to find and replicate the grind size that works best.

How to use your Bialetti Rainbow

1. Fill the bottom chamber with water
Fill with water to just below the safety valve.

2. Insert the filter funnel
Place the filter funnel in the bottom chamber.

3. Add coffee
Fill the funnel with medium-fine ground coffee.

The coffee should not be tamped.

4. Screw the espresso maker together
Screw the top and bottom parts together securely.

Avoid using the handle as leverage when tightening or loosening the pot.

5. Place the Rainbow on the stove
Use low to medium heat.

On gas, the flame must be kept under the base and must not extend up the sides of the pot.

If you have induction, use the Bialetti Induction Plate 13 cm between the induction zone and the pot.

6. Remove the pot from the heat
Once the coffee has risen to the top chamber, remove the Rainbow from the heat.

Avoid letting it sit and sputter unnecessarily long.

Which coffee beans are suitable for a moka pot?

Medium-roasted coffee beans are a good starting point if you want a balance between sweetness, body, and the coffee's character.

If you prefer a stronger and more classic flavor profile, you can try dark-roasted coffee beans.

You can also experiment with lighter roasts if you prefer more fruitiness and acidity.

Rainbow Red 1, 3, or 6 cups?

The red Rainbow is available in several sizes.

Bialetti Rainbow Red 1 cup
Approx. 60 ml – for one small serving.

Bialetti Rainbow Red 3 cups
Approx. 130 ml – for a smaller serving.

Bialetti Rainbow Red 6 cups
Approx. 270 ml – for a larger serving or several people.

Choose the size based on the amount of coffee you typically wish to brew.

Before first use

Clean the pot thoroughly with water before first use.

It is a good idea to perform the first few brews and discard them before using the Rainbow for regular coffee.

Simultaneously check that the filter funnel, gasket, filter plate, and safety valve are positioned correctly.

Cleaning and maintenance

Let the pot cool down after brewing.

Remove the coffee grounds and clean the parts gently.

Check regularly:

  • the gasket

  • the filter funnel

  • the filter plate

  • the safety valve

Replace worn or damaged parts with spare parts that fit the model.
