Colombia Excelso – decaffeinated medium roast
Produktbeskrivelse
Decaf Colombia Excelso – coffee without compromising on taste
Decaffeinated coffee doesn't have to be boring.
Our Colombia Excelso has a smooth and balanced flavor profile with notes of raspberry, blackberry, orange, and caramel.
The various notes give the coffee both fruitiness and sweetness, while the medium roast creates a rounded coffee profile that is neither very light nor very dark.
This makes it a great choice if you want to enjoy a cup of coffee at times when you prefer decaf, but still want a coffee with clear flavor and character.
The coffee is roasted at Brændeholm Risteri on Funen.

What does our decaf Colombia Excelso taste like?
The flavor notes are:
Raspberry · blackberry · orange · caramel
The coffee therefore has a more nuanced profile than a completely classic dark and chocolatey decaf.
Raspberry and blackberry contribute to the fruity side, orange provides a fresher nuance, while caramel adds sweetness and roundness.
The medium roast was chosen to create a balance between these different sides.
The result is a coffee that, in our assessment, can best be described as:
- Smooth
- Balanced
- Fruity without being extreme
- Pleasantly sweet
- Round in its overall expression
What does DCM-decaffeinated mean?
This Colombia Excelso is DCM-decaffeinated.
DCM stands for dichloromethane and refers to the method used to remove caffeine from the green coffee beans before roasting.
The most important thing for you as a coffee drinker is that the decaffeination takes place before we receive and roast the coffee.
When the coffee arrives at Brændeholm Risteri, we therefore work with it as decaffeinated raw coffee and adapt the roast to the flavor we want in the finished cup.
We roast it medium so that the coffee gets a rounded and balanced profile without being dominated by a very dark roast.
Why medium roast?
A decaffeinated coffee bean is still a coffee bean, and the roast profile continues to have a major impact on the taste.
For the Colombia Excelso, we choose a medium roast.
This allows us to work with:
- The balance between fruitiness and sweetness
- A rounder mouthfeel
- The caramelized flavor nuances
- Sufficient body
- The coffee's original character without a very light expression
It is also interesting that the data sheet for the Colombia Excelso Tulipa Antioquia, which may be the raw coffee base, specifically recommends a medium roast to highlight the coffee's fresh and expressive profile.
However, we do not use the more specific Tulipa data as product facts until the link to the decaffeinated coffee has been documented.

Decaf coffee for different brewing methods
Colombia Excelso has a relatively balanced profile, which makes it suitable for several methods.
Filter coffee
For filter coffee, you get a clean and balanced cup where the coffee's fruity notes have space along with the caramel sweetness.
If you use a regular coffee machine, you can use our guide to better filter coffee as a starting point.
French press
In a French press, the coffee gets more mouthfeel, which fits well with the medium roast's rounded character.
You can find our recommendations for dosage, grinding, and brewing time in the guide to better French press coffee.
AeroPress
Colombia Excelso can also be brewed on an AeroPress.
Here you can work with brewing time, temperature, and grind size yourself, thereby influencing the balance between the coffee's fruitiness, sweetness, and body.
See our guide to better coffee on AeroPress.
Espresso
The medium-roast profile also makes the coffee interesting for espresso if you want a decaf espresso with more fruitiness and sweetness than a very dark-roasted expression.
If you brew espresso yourself, we recommend whole coffee beans so that the grind size can be adjusted precisely to your machine.
You can find help for the setting in our guide to better espresso.
Decaf coffee for those who still care about taste
There can be many reasons for choosing decaf coffee.
Some only drink it in the evening. Others prefer decaf all day, and some switch between regular and decaf coffee.
On the product page, we don't need to guess why.
The crucial thing for us is that decaf should still be treated like real coffee.
That is why we choose raw coffee, roast it ourselves, and evaluate the roast profile based on how we want the finished coffee to taste.
Colombia Excelso is our decaf coffee for those who are looking for a smooth and balanced cup with both fruitiness and sweetness.
Whole coffee beans or ground decaf coffee
Colombia Excelso is available in:
- 250 g
- 500 g
- 1,000 g
You can choose:
- Whole coffee beans
- Ground for filter coffee
- Ground for French press
- Ground for AeroPress
If you have a coffee grinder, we generally recommend whole coffee beans and grinding immediately before brewing.
Especially for espresso, you should choose whole beans because the grind size usually needs to be adapted to the specific espresso machine.
Decaf coffee roasted on Funen
Colombia Excelso is roasted at Brændeholm Risteri on Funen.
The fact that the raw coffee is already decaffeinated does not change our fundamental approach to roasting: We taste the coffee and choose the profile that we think provides the best overall result.
For this Colombia Excelso, we have chosen a medium roast because we want a coffee with a balance between its fruity notes, caramel sweetness, and body.
The result is a decaf coffee that does not try to be anything else – but which first and foremost should be a good cup of coffee.
