From espresso to cold brew

One of the greatest strengths of the Fellow Opus is its wide grind range.

The grinder can be used for, among other things:

40 mm conical burrs

The Fellow Opus is equipped with 40 mm stainless steel conical burrs.

These conical burrs are designed to operate across a wide grind range, allowing the Opus to grind fine enough for espresso and coarse enough for, for example, French press and cold brew.

For you, this primarily means that you are not locked into one specific brewing method.

41+ adjustment settings

On the front of the Opus, you will find the outer adjustment ring with settings from 1 to 11.

Between the numbered steps are smaller intervals, so the outer ring alone provides 41 settings.

Furthermore, an internal micro-adjustment is located beneath the hopper.

This allows for even smaller changes to the grind size and is particularly useful when dialing in espresso.

Micro-adjustment for espresso

Espresso often requires very small changes in grind size.

If one setting results in an espresso shot that runs a little too fast, while the next one becomes a bit too fine, the internal adjustment ring can be used to get closer to the desired grind size.

The internal ring can also expand the overall operating range and be used for calibration as the burrs wear down over time.

This makes the Opus significantly more flexible for espresso than a standard filter grinder with large gaps between settings.

Fellow Opus for espresso

Yes – the Fellow Opus is designed for proper espresso.

A typical starting point might be:

18 g coffee in → approx. 36 g espresso out in about 25–35 seconds

The precise result, however, depends on the coffee beans, roast level, dose, filter basket, and your espresso machine.

If the espresso runs too fast, you adjust finer. If it runs too slow, you adjust coarser.

Once you are close to the right setting, the micro-adjustment really comes into its own.

54 and 58 mm portafilter attachment

The Opus comes with an insert for the catch cup that makes it easier to transfer ground coffee to 54 and 58 mm portafilters.

54 mm is used, among others, on several popular home espresso machines, while 58 mm is widely used on traditional espresso machines and prosumer models.

This makes the Opus practical if the grinder is primarily to be used with an espresso machine.

Fellow Opus for filter coffee and pour over

The Opus is not just an espresso grinder.

The wide grind range also makes it suitable for filter coffee, V60, Chemex, and other pour over methods.

Here, you work with a coarser setting than for espresso.

The precise grind size depends on, among other things:

• The coffee bean
• The roast level
• The dosage
• The amount of water
• The brewing method
• The desired brew time

For Hario V60, you can advantageously start at a medium to medium-fine grind and adjust according to draw-down time and taste.

Fellow Opus for AeroPress

AeroPress can be brewed with many different grind sizes, which fits very well with the Opus.

You can, for example, begin with a medium-fine setting and then adjust finer or coarser depending on your recipe.

The wide adjustment range allows you to work with both short, concentrated recipes and lighter brews.

Fellow Opus for French press

For French press, the Opus is set significantly coarser than for espresso and filter coffee.

A medium-coarse to coarse grind is a good place to start.

If the coffee becomes very muddy or bitter, you can try a coarser setting. If it becomes thin and lacks flavor, you can try slightly finer.

Single dose coffee grinder

The Opus is designed with single dosing in mind.

This means you weigh out the amount of coffee beans you need, pour them into the grinder, and grind them immediately before brewing.

A simple workflow could be:

Weigh beans → grind → brew

It is practical if you often switch between different coffees, as you do not need to keep a large amount of beans stored permanently in the grinder.

The hopper can hold up to 110 g, while the catch cup has a capacity of 100 g.

Anti-static technology

When coffee is ground, static electricity can cause the grounds to stick to the grinder, the catch cup, and the countertop.

The Fellow Opus therefore features built-in anti-static technology, which helps reduce this problem.

It does not mean the grinder will never make a mess, but the anti-static tech helps keep the workflow cleaner.

To maintain the effect, the area around the chute and the anti-static contact points should be kept free of coffee buildup.

Magnetic catch cup

The catch cup is held magnetically under the grinder's chute.

This makes it simple to place correctly and fits well with the Opus's minimalist single-dose workflow.

The included portafilter insert also makes it easier to transfer the coffee to 54 and 58 mm portafilters.

Automatic timed grinding

The Opus is operated with a single button and has multiple time settings:

1 short press: 30 seconds
2 short presses: 60 seconds
3 short presses: 90 seconds
Hold the button: up to 2 minutes

The grinder stops automatically after the selected time interval, and you can also stop it early.

This provides simple operation without a large display or many buttons.

Fellow Opus 1 or Opus 2?

This product is the original Fellow Opus, which Fellow today refers to as Opus 1.

The newer Fellow Opus 2 is a separate model.

Among the most significant differences is that the Opus 2 has 48 mm conical burrs and stepless adjustment, while this original Opus uses 40 mm conical burrs as well as an outer and inner adjustment ring.

The original Opus remains a versatile electric grinder for both espresso and filter, but the two models should be considered different products.

Fellow Opus or Fellow Ode?

The Fellow Opus and Fellow Ode are designed for different needs.

Opus can be used from espresso to cold brew.

Fellow Ode, conversely, is developed specifically for brewed coffee and is not intended for espresso.

If you want to grind for both espresso and filter coffee, the Opus is the relevant one of the two.

If you exclusively brew, for example, V60, Chemex, and regular drip coffee, a more specialized filter grinder might also be worth considering.

How to clean your Fellow Opus

Over time, coffee leaves behind both particles and coffee oils in the grinder.

With regular use, it is therefore a good idea to clean the burrs and grind chamber periodically.

Fellow recommends cleaning the burrs at least every three months with daily use. This can be done with a stiff brush or suitable grinder cleaning tablets.

The burrs must not be washed with water.

Fellow specifically mentions Urnex Grindz as a suitable method for automatic cleaning.
