Hario Mizudashi Cold Brewer 1 L – brown

Make a large batch of fresh cold brew at home with the Hario Mizudashi Cold Brewer 1 L in brown. The tall glass carafe features a long, reusable filter that allows you to brew, store, and serve coffee all from the same pitcher.

Fill the filter with ground coffee, add cold water, and place the carafe in the refrigerator. After approximately 8 hours of extraction, remove the filter, and your cold brew is ready to serve.

One liter of cold brew at a time

The large Mizudashi model has a finished brewing capacity of 1,000 ml, which Hario defines as 8 small cups. This size is well-suited for households with multiple coffee drinkers or for those who prefer to prepare enough cold brew for several servings.

The finished coffee can be used for, among other things:

  • Cold brew served straight from the refrigerator

  • Cold brew over ice cubes

  • Iced coffee with milk or plant-based drinks

  • Coffee drinks with syrup or flavorings

  • A larger serving for guests

The carafe can be stored upright in the refrigerator while the coffee is brewing or once it is ready to serve.

Reusable filter with no need for paper filters

The Mizudashi uses a removable, fine-mesh filter. Consequently, you do not need to use a new paper filter for every brew.

The filter frame is made of polypropylene, while the filter mesh itself consists of polyester. This construction retains most of the coffee grounds while allowing more of the coffee's natural oils to pass through compared to a standard paper filter.

This can result in a cold brew with a full-bodied mouthfeel and a bit more texture. A small amount of fine sediment may occur, especially if the coffee is ground very finely.

How to make cold brew with the Hario Mizudashi

  1. Remove the filter from the carafe.

  2. Add approximately 80 grams of freshly ground coffee to the filter.

  3. Place the filter correctly into the glass carafe.

  4. Slowly pour cold water over the coffee in small portions.

  5. Ensure the entire bed of coffee is evenly moistened.

  6. Fill the carafe to the recommended level.

  7. Put the lid on and place the carafe in the refrigerator.

  8. Let the coffee steep for approximately 8 hours.

  9. Remove the filter once extraction is complete.

  10. Place the lid back on the carafe and serve the coffee as needed.

The steeping time is a guideline and can be adjusted based on the type of coffee and desired strength. Always remove the filter after brewing, as the coffee would otherwise continue to extract and may develop an unnecessarily bitter taste.

What grind size should be used?

Hario recommends a medium-fine grind for their official recipe. A very coarse grind can result in a lighter and thinner coffee, while a very fine grind can lead to more sediment in the finished brew.

A good starting point is to use a grind size around medium-fine to medium-coarse, and then adjust based on the result:

  • Grind slightly finer if the coffee seems thin or weak.

  • Grind slightly coarser if the coffee has a lot of sediment.

  • Gently extend the steeping time for more strength.

  • Reduce the steeping time if the coffee becomes too intense.

Feel free to use freshly ground coffee beans, as the grind has a significant impact on both aroma and extraction.

Cold brew or regular iced coffee?

Cold brew and iced coffee are not exactly the same. Regular iced coffee is often prepared by brewing hot coffee and then cooling it with ice.

In contrast, cold brew is brewed with cold water throughout the entire process. The long extraction at a low temperature typically yields a smooth, round, and full-bodied coffee with lower perceived bitterness than quickly cooled, hot-brewed coffee.

Cold brew can be drunk straight, but it can also be diluted with water or combined with milk, depending on how strong you brew it.

Heat-resistant Hario glass

The carafe is made from Hario's heat-resistant glass. The lid, filter frame, and the band around the handle are made of polypropylene, while the gasket consists of silicone rubber.

The color is officially designated as Chocolate Brown and is seen on the carafe's plastic parts. This gives the cold brewer a discreet and classic look.

Cleaning and maintenance

Remove the coffee grounds from the filter immediately after brewing. Rinse the filter mesh thoroughly from both sides so that coffee and fine particles do not dry and stick to the mesh.

Wash the parts with warm water, a mild dish soap, and a soft sponge. Avoid hard brushes and sharp objects that could damage the filter mesh or scratch the carafe.

Let all parts dry completely before the cold brewer is assembled and stored.

How much coffee should I use?

Hario's official recipe is based on approximately 80 grams of ground coffee. The amount can be adjusted according to the coffee type and desired strength.

How long should the coffee steep?

As a baseline, let the coffee steep in the refrigerator for approximately 8 hours. The steeping time can be adjusted to your preferred strength and flavor profile.

What grind size should I use?
