How much coffee does the Bialetti Rainbow 3 cups make?
The Bialetti Rainbow 3 cups has a capacity of approximately 130 ml of brewed coffee.
The term 3 cups does not mean three standard coffee mugs. Bialetti's sizing is based on small portions of moka pot coffee.
Moka pot coffee is more concentrated than regular drip coffee, and the 3-cup model is therefore ideal if you:
- typically brew for one person
- want a smaller portion to share
- use the coffee as a base for a milk-based drink
- prefer a compact moka pot
If you need more coffee at once, you can choose the Bialetti Rainbow Blue 6 cups, which brews approximately 270 ml.
Rainbow – classic moka pot with more color
Bialetti Rainbow is based on the traditional moka pot principle, but the series distinguishes itself from the classic silver Moka Express with its bright colors.
The blue version combines the aluminum construction, ergonomic handle, and Bialetti's safety valve with a more colorful expression.
This makes it a great choice if you want a simple coffee maker for the stovetop that also stands out in the kitchen.
Does the Bialetti Rainbow make real espresso?
No.
Even though this type of coffee maker is often called an espresso maker in Danish, it does not brew traditional espresso like an espresso machine.
When the water in the bottom chamber is heated, pressure builds up, forcing the water through the ground coffee and into the top chamber.
The result is an intense and concentrated moka pot coffee, but the brewing occurs at a lower pressure than classic espresso.
If you want to learn more about dosage, grind size, and brewing technique, you can read our guide to coffee on moka pots.
Can the Bialetti Rainbow be used on induction?
Not directly.
The Rainbow is made of aluminum and is therefore not directly compatible with induction stovetops.
If you have induction, you can use the Bialetti Induction Plate 13 cm between the induction zone and the moka pot.
The induction plate is heated by the induction zone and transfers heat to the aluminum pot. Bialetti's 13 cm model is intended for moka pots of up to 6 cups.
If you would rather have a moka pot that can be used directly on induction without an adapter, you can view our other moka pots.
What grind size should be used?
A medium-fine grind size is a good starting point for a moka pot.
The coffee should be:
- finer than regular drip coffee
- coarser than coffee for a traditional espresso machine
- gritty rather than powdery fine
Fill the filter funnel loosely and evenly with coffee.
Do not tamp the coffee.
If the brewing process is very slow, or if the coffee becomes bitter, you can try a slightly coarser grind.
If the result is too thin, try a slightly finer grind.
A good coffee grinder makes it easier to adjust the grind and replicate a great result.
How to use the Bialetti Rainbow
1. Fill the bottom chamber with water
Fill with water up to just below the safety valve.
2. Insert the filter funnel
Place the filter funnel into the bottom chamber.
3. Add coffee
Fill the filter funnel loosely and evenly with medium-fine ground coffee.
Do not tamp the coffee.
4. Assemble the moka pot
Screw the top and bottom sections together securely.
Avoid using the handle for leverage when tightening or loosening the pot.
5. Place the Rainbow on the stove
Use low to medium heat.
On gas, the flame must be kept under the bottom and must not lick up the sides of the pot.
If you have induction, use the Bialetti Induction Plate 13 cm between the induction zone and the Rainbow.
6. Remove the pot from the heat
Once the coffee has risen to the top chamber, remove the pot from the heat.
Avoid letting the coffee sputter unnecessarily long.
Which coffee beans are suitable for a moka pot?
You can use different roast levels depending on your preferred taste.
Medium-roast coffee beans are a good starting point if you want a balance between sweetness, body, and the coffee's character.
If you prefer a more robust and classic flavor profile, you can try dark-roast coffee beans.
You can also experiment with lighter roasts if you want more fruitiness and acidity.
Rainbow Blue 3 or 6 cups?
The choice is primarily about the amount of coffee you normally wish to brew.
Rainbow Blue 3 cups
- approx. 130 ml
- compact size
- suitable for a smaller portion
- approx. 270 ml
- more than double the capacity
- better for several people or more coffee drinks
If 130 ml is usually sufficient, the 3-cup model is the most compact solution. If you often need more coffee, the 6-cup model provides more flexibility.
Before first use
Clean the moka pot thoroughly with water before first use.
Then brew a few pots and discard the coffee before using the Rainbow for regular use.
At the same time, check that the filter funnel, gasket, filter plate, and safety valve are seated correctly.
Cleaning and maintenance
Let the Rainbow cool down after brewing before opening it.
Remove the coffee grounds and clean the parts gently with water.
Regularly check:
- the gasket
- the filter funnel
- the filter plate
- the safety valve
Worn or damaged parts should be replaced with spare parts that fit the model.
