Rwanda Muteteli - Freshly roasted coffee

Rwanda is a diverse country with fertile soils and generally high elevation, with its lowest point at 950 meters above sea level. In the east, muddy swamps and sunny savannas characterize the landscape, while the center offers rolling hills. To the west are the montane forests of the Albertine Rift region, which are home to rich wildlife. Lake Kivu, the largest in Rwanda, marks the border with Congo to the west. This area, which belongs to the Albertine Rift mountains, is generally cooler than the east, providing optimal conditions for coffee production. The volcanoes in the region have enriched the soil with nutrients, which promote lush slopes.

Rwanda's first coffee exports were carried out by Belgian colonists in 1917, and the low-quality production that was created was mainly sold to Belgium. However, in the early 2000s, coffee was seen as an opportunity to rebuild the country.

In 2004, the first washing station opened, which laid the foundation for quality coffee production. Today, coffee is grown throughout Rwanda, as the country generally sits on elevated plateaus. Although coffee production here is relatively new, Rwandan coffees impress with their gentle sweetness and complex fruitiness. The increasing recognition of these coffees in the specialty coffee world has made high-quality coffee increasingly important, which has resulted in the construction of many washing stations that give smallholder farmers access to the market.
