SAGE The Smart Grinder Pro BCG820BTR
Produktbeskrivelse
Sage Smart Grinder Pro – coffee grinder for espresso and filter coffee
The Sage The Smart Grinder Pro BCG820 is an electric coffee grinder for those who want a simple workflow and the ability to use the same grinder for several different brewing methods.
The grinder has 60 grind settings ranging from fine espresso to coarser coffee for French press. The dosing is electronically controlled by time, and it can grind directly into a portafilter, coffee container, or filter.
This makes the Smart Grinder Pro particularly interesting for the home user who does not necessarily want a specialized single-dose espresso grinder, but one user-friendly electric coffee grinder for multiple purposes.
60 grind settings
The Smart Grinder Pro has 60 different settings for the grind size.
This allows you to move from relatively fine espresso grounds to significantly coarser coffee for, for example, filter coffee and French press. Sage describes the grinder's range as espresso to plunger/French Press.
The grind size is selected using the dial on the side of the grinder.
The correct setting depends on, among other things:
- The coffee beans
- The roast level
- The brewing method
- The dosage
- Your desired brew time
You should therefore consider the settings as a working range rather than a universal recipe.
Sage Smart Grinder Pro for espresso
The Smart Grinder Pro can be used for espresso.
Here, the grind size is especially important, as even small changes can significantly affect the flow.
A practical starting point could be:
18 g coffee in
36 g espresso out
in approximately:
25–35 seconds
If the espresso runs too fast, adjust the grinder finer.
If it runs too slowly, adjust it coarser.
Sage's own manual also suggests a starting setting for espresso and then recommends adjusting finer or coarser based on the flow.
Adjustable upper burr
In addition to the 60 standard grind settings, the upper burr element can be adjusted.
This makes it possible to shift the grinder's overall working range if a specific coffee or brewing method requires finer or coarser grinding than usual.
Sage recommends changing the upper burr one step at a time.
This is especially interesting if you use the grinder a lot for espresso and find that the normal adjustment range does not fit your coffee optimally.
Stainless steel conical burrs
The Smart Grinder Pro uses hardened stainless steel conical burrs.
This is a real burr grinder, not a blade grinder.
The grind size is therefore determined by the distance between the grinding elements rather than just how long a rotating blade chops the coffee beans.
This allows for much better control over the grind.
Dosing iQ – what does it mean?
The Smart Grinder Pro uses Sage's Dosing iQ system.
Here it is important to correct your current product text slightly.
The grinder does not weigh the coffee, and it does not automatically measure out grams.
The dosage is controlled by grind time.
You select shots or cups, and the grind time can then be fine-tuned in intervals of 0.2 seconds. The desired time can be saved for that particular brewing method.
This provides a practical and relatively reproducible daily workflow.
Electronic dosing in 0.2-second steps
With the GRIND AMOUNT dial, the grind time can be changed in intervals of 0.2 seconds.
More time provides more ground coffee.
Less time provides less coffee.
Once you have found the desired dosage, it can be programmed.
This makes the Smart Grinder Pro particularly practical if you use the same coffee and dose every day.
You do not necessarily need to weigh the coffee beans before every single grind, as you would typically do with a single-dose grinder.
LCD display
The built-in LCD display shows, among other things:
Grind setting
Grind time
Selected number of shots or cups
This makes it easier to return to a previous setup and view your settings during use.
Grind directly into the portafilter
The Smart Grinder Pro comes with two portafilter cradles:
50–54 mm
and
58 mm.
This means you can grind directly into the portafilter without first using a separate dosing cup.
The portafilter can also activate the grinder via the switch at the cradle, so grinding can be done hands-free.
Sage Smart Grinder Pro for 54 mm
The small included cradle supports 50–54 mm portafilters.
This makes the grinder obvious for use with many Sage espresso machines with a 54 mm portafilter.
This could, for example, be relevant if you want a separate grinder to go with an espresso machine without a built-in grinder.
Sage Smart Grinder Pro for 58 mm
A cradle for 58 mm portafilters is also included.
The Smart Grinder Pro is therefore not limited to Sage machines.
It can also be part of an espresso setup with another manufacturer and a traditional 58 mm portafilter.
450 g bean hopper
The bean hopper can hold up to 450 grams of coffee beans and has a locking system so the hopper can be removed with beans inside.
This makes the Smart Grinder Pro different from single-dose grinders like the Varia VS3 and Eureka Mignon Zero.
Here you can keep a larger amount of the coffee you use daily ready in the hopper.
This is especially practical if you:
use the same coffee every day
make several cups
do not want to weigh every single dose
and prioritize a quick workflow.
Hopper or single dose?
The Smart Grinder Pro is primarily built around a hopper workflow.
If you use the same coffee every morning, this can be very practical.
You set:
grind size
number of shots
and grind time.
Then you can grind directly into the portafilter.
If, on the other hand, you change coffee beans after almost every brew and consistently weigh out, for example, 18.0 grams of beans, a dedicated single-dose grinder like the Varia VS3 or Eureka Mignon Zero will often suit that workflow better.
Smart Grinder Pro for filter coffee
The Smart Grinder Pro can also be used for filter coffee.
Here the coffee can be ground directly into the included container or, for example, into a filter. Sage specifically lists filter coffee as one of the grinder's application areas.
This makes the model interesting if you make both espresso and regular filter coffee.
Just remember that a large change from espresso to filter requires the grind setting to be moved accordingly.
Smart Grinder Pro for V60
For V60, you can start with a medium to medium-fine grind size.
Then adjust according to the flow and taste.
If the water runs very quickly:
→ try a little finer.
If it runs very slowly:
→ try coarser.
The numbered adjustment also makes it relatively simple to note the setting you use for each brewing method.
Smart Grinder Pro for AeroPress
AeroPress works with a relatively wide range of grind sizes.
The Smart Grinder Pro therefore fits well with AeroPress, especially if you also use the grinder for other brewing methods.
For our standard AeroPress recipe, medium-fine would be a reasonable starting point, after which you adjust according to the recipe and taste.
Smart Grinder Pro for French press
At the coarse end, the Smart Grinder Pro can be used for French press.
Sage states the grinder's working range is from espresso to plunger/French Press.
For French press, a medium-coarse to coarse grind is a good starting point.
Automatic, manual, or programmed grinding
The Smart Grinder Pro can be used in several ways.
You can use a programmed dosage, let the grinder stop automatically after the selected time, or hold the button/portafilter switch for manual grinding.
The grinder also has a pause function during automatic dosing.
This makes it possible to both choose the quick daily workflow and take over more manual control as needed.
Smart Grinder Pro vs Fellow Opus
Both models are relevant as all-around coffee grinders.
Sage Smart Grinder Pro is especially interesting if you want:
a large 450 g hopper
electronic timed dosing
LCD display
direct dosing into the portafilter
60 easy-to-understand grind settings.
Fellow Opus is more oriented towards weighing a small portion of beans and using the grinder across many brewing methods.
The Smart Grinder Pro is therefore the more traditional hopper + timed dosing solution.
Smart Grinder Pro vs Varia VS3 Gen 2
Here the difference is even clearer.
Sage Smart Grinder Pro
60 fixed grind settings
450 g hopper
timed dosing
LCD display
direct portafilter dosing
built for broad application.
Varia VS3 Gen 2
single dose
stepless adjustment
very fine espresso adjustment
smaller hopper
low-retention workflow
more espresso enthusiast-oriented.
If you especially want user-friendliness and quick everyday dosing, Sage has a clear advantage.
If you are constantly dialing in espresso in very small steps, the VS3 is more specialized for that workflow.
Smart Grinder Pro vs Eureka Mignon Zero
The Eureka Mignon Zero is likewise significantly more single-dose and espresso-oriented.
The Mignon Zero has stepless micrometric adjustment and 55 mm flat burrs, while the Sage uses 60 fixed grind settings and a large hopper.
Therefore, I would choose based on workflow rather than just price or brand.
Sage: convenience and all-around.
Eureka: espresso and single dosing.
Adjusting espresso
If you want to use the Smart Grinder Pro for espresso, start by finding a suitable grind size.
Then pull a shot.
If 36 g of espresso from, for example, 18 g of coffee comes out very quickly:
adjust finer.
If it takes a very long time:
adjust coarser.
Once the grind size is close, you can adjust the grind time in small 0.2-second intervals to hit the desired coffee quantity.
Grind time is not the same as grams
It is important to understand this.
If you set the grinder to, for example, 10 seconds, it does not mean it will always produce the exact same number of grams.
The output can change with:
the coffee bean
the grind size
the characteristics of the beans
and how full the hopper is.
For espresso, we therefore still recommend a coffee scale if you want to work very precisely.
Dosing iQ makes dosing more practical – it does not necessarily replace weighing.
Adjustable upper burr
If you find that all the normal espresso settings are still too coarse or too fine, the upper burr can be adjusted.
Sage has created this function specifically to be able to expand the usable grinding range.
However, this should not be the first adjustment you make.
Always start with the regular external grind size setting.
Dimensions
Sage's current Danish product page states:
21.5 × 16 × 38.9 cm.
This makes the Smart Grinder Pro taller than, for example, some compact single-dose grinders, which is mainly due to the large hopper.
If the grinder is to be placed under a kitchen cabinet, it is therefore worth checking the height in advance.
Cleaning
Regular cleaning is especially important for espresso.
Sage recommends that the hopper be emptied, the grinder run until empty, and the upper and lower burrs as well as the outlet cleaned with the brush. Electrical parts and burrs should not be rinsed with water.
The hopper and container can be cleaned separately according to the instructions in the manual.
Energy saving function
If the grinder is not used for five minutes, it automatically goes into standby.
It can be reactivated via the control panel.
What is included?
The Smart Grinder Pro comes with:
50–54 mm portafilter cradle
58 mm portafilter cradle
Container for ground coffee with lid
Cleaning brush for the conical burrs.
