Clever Dripper

Clever Dripper – simple and controlled coffee brewing

The Clever Dripper combines two well-known methods of brewing coffee: immersion and paper filtration.

The coffee is allowed to steep in the water, much like a French press. Only when the Clever Dripper is placed on top of a cup or carafe does the valve at the bottom open, allowing the coffee to flow through the paper filter.

The result is a simple brewing method where you can control the steep time without needing to manage the pouring speed as you would with a traditional pour-over.

At Brændeholm Risteri, you will find the Clever Dripper in various colors, as well as the filters that fit the brewer.

What is a Clever Dripper?

At first glance, the Clever Dripper looks like a standard filter holder, but it features a valve at the bottom that holds the water inside the brewer.

This means that the coffee and water can steep together for a set period.

When the Clever Dripper is placed on an appropriate cup or carafe, the valve is activated, and the finished coffee flows through the filter.

The method is often called immersion brewing because the ground coffee is submerged in water for the majority of the brewing process.

At the same time, the paper filter retains a large portion of the coffee's fine particles and oils.

Why choose the Clever Dripper?

One of the biggest advantages of the Clever Dripper is that the brewing process is easy to repeat.

With traditional pour-over, the pouring speed, pouring pattern, and water flow can significantly impact the result. With the Clever Dripper, you can rely more on time, dosage, and grind size to control the brew.

This makes it particularly well-suited if you:

• Want a simple manual coffee brewer
• Would like to be able to repeat the same recipe
• Prefer coffee filtered through paper
• Do not want to master advanced pour-over techniques
• Brew one or two cups at a time
• Would like to experiment with different coffee beans

This does not mean there is only one correct Clever recipe. You can still adjust the grind size, brew time, temperature, and the ratio of coffee to water.

How to brew coffee with the Clever Dripper

There are many recipes for the Clever Dripper. A simple starting point is:

20 grams of coffee to 320 grams of water

This corresponds to a ratio of approximately 1:16.

Method

  1. Place a paper filter in the Clever Dripper.
  2. Rinse the filter with hot water and discard the rinse water.
  3. Grind 20 grams of coffee beans to a medium or medium-coarse consistency.
  4. Pour 320 grams of hot water into the Clever Dripper.
  5. Add the ground coffee.
  6. Gently ensure that all the coffee is wet.
  7. Let the coffee steep.
  8. After about 2 minutes, you can gently stir or break the crust on the surface.
  9. Place the Clever Dripper on your cup or carafe.
  10. The valve opens automatically, and the coffee runs through the filter.
  11. Let the coffee drain completely and serve.

Use this recipe as a starting point and adjust to taste.

The manufacturer's own recipe uses 18.5 grams of coffee to 310 grams of water with a total brew time of about 2 minutes and 30 seconds, so there is plenty of room to experiment with different recipes.

How much coffee should I use?

A ratio of around 60–65 grams of coffee per liter of water is a good starting point.

For example, this could be:

• 15 g of coffee to 250 g of water
• 20 g of coffee to 320 g of water
• 25 g of coffee to 400 g of water
• 30 g of coffee to 500 g of water

If you prefer a stronger or lighter cup, you can adjust the ratio.

We recommend using a coffee scale so you can repeat a brew that you are satisfied with.

Which grind size is suitable for the Clever Dripper?

Start with a medium to medium-coarse grind.

The Clever Dripper is relatively forgiving because the coffee has time to steep in the water before passing through the filter.

If the coffee tastes thin, sharp, or lacks sweetness, you can try a slightly finer grind.

If the coffee becomes very bitter, dry, or takes a long time to drain through the filter, you can try a coarser grind.

A good coffee grinder makes it easier to make small adjustments and find the setting that best suits your coffee beans.

What water temperature should I use?

Very hot water works well with the Clever Dripper.

A good starting point is around 92–100 °C.

For light-roasted coffee beans, you may want to start at the higher end. For darker roasts, try a slightly lower temperature if the coffee tastes too bitter or overly roasted.

However, temperature should not be considered in isolation. Grind size, brew time, and coffee dosage also affect the final result.

Clever Dripper or Hario V60?

The Clever Dripper and Hario V60 both use paper filters, but the brewing methods are different.

With a V60, the water passes through the coffee bed throughout the entire brewing process. Your pouring technique and the water flow are therefore very significant.

With the Clever Dripper, the water is held inside the brewer while the coffee steeps. Only then is the valve opened.

V60 provides great control over the pour itself and is well-suited for those who want to work actively with pour-over technique.

Clever Dripper is easier to keep consistent from brew to brew and requires less focus on pouring technique.

Both can produce excellent filter coffee – they just do it in different ways.

Clever Dripper or French press?

The Clever Dripper also has a lot in common with a French press.

In both brewing methods, the coffee beans are in contact with the water for a longer time.

The major difference is the filtration.

A French press usually uses a metal filter, while the Clever Dripper uses a paper filter.

The paper filter retains more fine coffee particles and a larger portion of the oils. As a result, Clever-brewed coffee is often perceived as cleaner in the cup, whereas French press coffee typically has more body and sediment.

Which coffee beans are best for the Clever Dripper?

The Clever Dripper can be used with light, medium, and dark-roasted coffee beans.

Light-roasted coffee

A good choice if you want to highlight fruitiness, acidity, and more delicate flavor nuances.

Medium-roasted coffee

A versatile choice that often provides a good balance between sweetness, body, and the coffee's original character.

Dark-roasted coffee

Can provide a stronger and more roasted flavor profile. If the coffee becomes too bitter, you can try a slightly lower temperature or a coarser grind.

There is, therefore, no single "Clever coffee." Use the brewer's simplicity to experiment with different coffee beans.

What filters does the Clever Dripper use?

The large Clever Dripper uses standard #4 paper filters, which makes the filters relatively easy to handle and replace. The manufacturer also specifies a standard #4 filter for the large Clever Dripper.

We also carry filters specifically intended for the Clever Dripper in our assortment.

It is a good idea to rinse the paper filter with hot water before brewing. This can reduce any potential paper taste and simultaneously warm up the brewer.

What is the capacity of the Clever Dripper?

The large Clever Dripper has a practical capacity of approximately 500 ml.

This makes it suitable for, for example, one large portion or about two regular cups of coffee.

If you brew up to the maximum capacity, there must naturally be room for both water and coffee during the brewing process.

What is the Clever Dripper made of?

The classic Clever Dripper is made of heat-resistant, BPA-free Tritan material. The manufacturer specifically specifies Eastman Tritan copolyester for the standard model.

The material makes the brewer lightweight and robust for daily use.

In our assortment, there may also be Clever variants in other materials, so please check the specifications for each individual product.

How to clean the Clever Dripper

After brewing, the paper filter and coffee grounds can be removed.

Rinse the brewer after use, and make sure, in particular, to keep the area around the valve clean.

Periodically, the Clever Dripper should be cleaned more thoroughly so that coffee oils and residues do not accumulate.

Always follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions for your specific model.

Frequently asked questions about the Clever Dripper

What is the Clever Dripper?

The Clever Dripper is a manual coffee brewer that combines immersion with paper filtration. A valve holds the coffee in the brewer until it is placed on a cup or carafe.

Is the Clever Dripper a pour-over?

Not quite. It looks like a pour-over brewer and uses a paper filter, but the majority of the extraction occurs through immersion, where the coffee and water steep together.

How much coffee should I use?

About 60–65 grams of coffee per liter of water is a good starting point. For instance, you can start with 20 grams of coffee to about 320 grams of water.

How fine should the coffee be ground?

Start with a medium to medium-coarse grind and adjust according to taste and draw-down time.

How long should the Clever Dripper steep?

There are various recipes. A contact time of about 2–4 minutes is a good range to experiment within.

Should water or coffee go in first?

Both methods are used. A practical method is to pour the water in first and then add the coffee. This can help reduce the risk of very fine coffee dust settling in the filter and slowing the drainage.

What filters fit the Clever Dripper?

The large Clever Dripper uses standard #4 paper filters.

Is the Clever Dripper good for beginners?

Yes. It requires relatively little pouring technique compared to traditional pour-over methods and makes it easy to work with a fixed dosage and brew time.

What is the difference between the Clever Dripper and V60?

The V60 is primarily a flow-through method where the water is constantly moving through the coffee. The Clever Dripper keeps water and coffee together during brewing and only releases the coffee through the filter afterward.
