Guide: How to choose the right moka pot
Moka pots come in various sizes, materials, and models. The most important thing is to choose a pot that suits your stove, the amount of coffee you want to brew, and the type of mocha coffee you prefer.
Here you will get help with choosing.
What is a moka pot?
A moka pot basically consists of three parts:
-
A bottom container for water
-
A filter basket for the ground coffee
-
A top container where the finished coffee collects
When the water is heated, pressure builds up in the bottom container. The water moves through the ground coffee and up into the top part of the pot.
The result is a concentrated and full-bodied coffee with more intensity than regular drip coffee.
Although we in Denmark often call it an espressokande (espresso pot), it does not brew espresso in a technical sense. A traditional espresso machine operates with a significantly higher brewing pressure. Therefore, the brewer is often called a moka pot internationally.
Bialetti moka pots
Bialetti is closely linked to the classic Italian moka pot and is, among other things, the maker of the iconic Bialetti Moka Express.
At Brændeholm Risteri, you will find various Bialetti models, so you can choose based on:
-
Stove type
-
Number of cups
-
Material
-
Design
-
Color
Bialetti Moka Express
Moka Express is the classic Bialetti moka pot with the characteristic octagonal design.
The traditional model is manufactured in aluminum and is available in several sizes.
If you have a standard gas, ceramic, or electric stove, the Moka Express is a classic choice.
If you have induction, be aware that the traditional Moka Express in aluminum generally does not work directly on induction.
Moka pot for induction
If you have an induction stove, the base of the moka pot must be induction-compatible.
Bialetti offers, among other things, models developed for this purpose, and several stainless steel moka pots are also available in induction-compatible versions.
Always check the specifications of the individual model, as induction compatibility can vary between models and sizes.
If you already have a classic moka pot, a compatible induction plate can in some cases make it possible to use it on an induction stove.
What size moka pot should I choose?
Sizes of moka pots are usually stated in the number of cups.
It is important to know that 1 cup on a Bialetti does not correspond to a standard Danish coffee mug. It refers to a small serving of concentrated mocha coffee.
Therefore, you should look at the actual capacity of the individual model and not just the number of cups.
As a rule of thumb:
-
Small models are suitable for one person or small servings
-
Medium models fit one or two people well
-
Larger models are practical when you are brewing for several people
Always check the specific capacity on the product page before choosing a size.
Aluminum or stainless steel?
Both materials are used for moka pots, but they have different properties.
Aluminum
The classic Bialetti Moka Express is manufactured in aluminum.
Aluminum gives the traditional moka pot its characteristic look and low weight.
Stainless steel
Moka pots in stainless steel typically have a more modern look and are often found in models that work on several different heat sources.
If you have induction, stainless steel is often relevant, but you should still check whether the specific model and size are approved for induction.

What coffee is best for a moka pot?
A moka pot can be used with many different coffee beans, so the choice depends largely on the taste you want.
Medium-roasted coffee beans often provide a balanced combination of sweetness, body, and aroma.
Dark-roasted coffee beans are obvious if you prefer a stronger and more intense cup with classic dark flavor notes.
If you prefer more fruitiness, freshness, and acidity, you can also experiment with lighter roasts.
Freshly roasted coffee beans also give you the opportunity to get the most out of the aroma in your mocha coffee.
What grind size should I use?
Coffee for a moka pot should normally be ground finer than coffee for a regular drip coffee machine, but coarser than the very fine grind typically used for espresso.
The coffee should also not be tamped.
If you have your own coffee grinder, you can adjust the grind size a little at a time until you find the combination of brewing time and taste that you prefer.
Cleaning the moka pot
Let the pot cool down after brewing before taking it apart.
Remove the coffee grounds and clean the relevant parts according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Pay special attention to:
-
Filter
-
Filter basket
-
Gasket
-
Safety valve
The gasket and filter are wear parts and may need replacement over time.
Always follow the cleaning instructions for the specific Bialetti or moka pot, as materials and recommendations can vary.
Frequently asked questions about moka pots
Are a moka pot and an espresso pot the same thing?
Yes. In Denmark, the names "espressokande" and "mokkakande" are often used for the same type of brewer. Internationally, the term "moka pot" is also used.
Does a moka pot make real espresso?
Not in a technical sense. An espresso machine brews at a higher pressure. The moka pot instead makes a concentrated and intense mocha coffee.
Which moka pot can be used on induction?
You must choose a model where the manufacturer specifically states compatibility with induction. Bialetti produces several induction-compatible models.
Can Bialetti Moka Express be used on induction?
The traditional Moka Express in aluminum generally does not work directly on a standard induction stove. Choose an induction-compatible Bialetti model or use a suitable induction plate.
Should coffee be tamped in a moka pot?
No. Fill the filter basket and distribute the coffee evenly without pressing or tamping it.
What coffee should I use?
Medium- and dark-roasted coffee beans are good choices for a classic, full-bodied mocha coffee. Lighter roasts can be used if you want more fruitiness and acidity.
How many cups should I choose?
Bialetti's cup ratings correspond to small portions of mocha coffee and not regular coffee mugs. Therefore, also use the product's stated capacity when choosing a size.
