The original Chemex glass lid is placed on top of your Chemex coffee maker after brewing and helps retain heat by reducing evaporation from the carafe.
The lid is made of borosilicate glass and follows the simple and timeless design of the Chemex. It is a practical accessory if you are not serving the entire carafe at once and would like to keep the coffee warm for a little longer.

How to use the Chemex glass lid
When the coffee has finished brewing:
- Remove the paper filter and the coffee grounds.
- Place the glass lid gently in the opening of the Chemex carafe.
- Leave the lid in place until you are ready to pour the coffee.
- Remove the lid before serving.
The lid rests on the top of the brewer and is not an airtight lid.
Why use a lid on a Chemex?
A Chemex has a relatively large open top once the paper filter is removed.
If coffee is left in the carafe after brewing, both heat and steam escape through this opening.
The Chemex glass lid covers the opening and helps to reduce this evaporation so that the coffee retains its heat better.
This is especially practical if you are brewing a larger portion in a Chemex 6 or 8-cup and do not drink the whole carafe at once.
Which Chemex models does the lid fit?
Chemex states that the CMC glass lid fits all of their coffee makers except for the Funnex.
This means, among others, that it fits:
- Chemex Classic 3-cup
- Chemex Classic 6-cup
- Chemex Classic 8-cup
- Other compatible Chemex Classic models
- Chemex models with glass handles
- Compatible hand-blown Chemex models
It does not fit the Chemex Funnex.
Borosilicate glass
Chemex uses borosilicate glass for their glass products.
The material also fits visually with the Chemex brewer itself, so the lid appears as a natural part of the design rather than a separate plastic or metal lid.
Cleaning
The Chemex glass lid can be cleaned with warm water and mild dish soap.
CHEMEX also states that the glass product can be cleaned in the dishwasher.
As with other glassware, it should be placed securely so that it does not bump against other objects during washing.
A practical supplement for larger Chemex brews
The glass lid makes the most sense if you often brew more coffee than you pour at once.
For example, if you brew 700–1,000 ml in a larger Chemex, the lid can be placed on after brewing while the rest of the coffee remains in the carafe.
