PUQpress automatic espresso tamper
PUQpress manufactures automatic espresso tampers with a focus on making tamping more consistent and reducing manual strain in a busy coffee shop.
At Brændeholm Risteri, you will find the PUQpress M2 Gen 5 58.3 mm, which is an integrated automatic tamper for compatible Mythos coffee grinders.
The M2 is primarily relevant for professional or high-volume espresso setups where many portafilters are tamped throughout a workday.
For general home use, a manual tamper will be sufficient for the vast majority.
What is an automatic tamper?
An automatic tamper performs the tamping process mechanically.
Instead of the barista manually pressing the tamper into the filter basket, the portafilter is placed in the machine, after which the tamper performs the tamping with the selected setting.
This is especially relevant in coffee shops where many espressos are prepared in succession.
The purpose is, among other things, to make tamping easier to replicate from barista to barista and to reduce the physical movement that would otherwise be repeated many times throughout the workday.
However, an automatic tamper only replaces the tamping.
It:
-
does not grind the coffee
-
does not dose the coffee
-
does not necessarily distribute the coffee
-
does not select the espresso recipe
-
does not adjust the coffee grinder
It should therefore be seen as one part of the overall espresso workflow.
PUQpress M2 Gen 5
The PUQpress M2 is an integrated automatic tamper that is mounted together with compatible Mythos coffee grinders.
Instead of taking up separate counter space, the M2 is placed under the grinder.
This creates a workflow where the portafilter can be moved from grinding directly to tamping at the same workstation.
The model we carry at Brændeholm Risteri is equipped with a 58.3 mm tamper.
Always check compatibility with your coffee grinder and your portafilter before ordering.
Which coffee grinders does the PUQpress M2 fit?
PUQpress has developed the M2 specifically for the Mythos series.
This means that you should not buy the M2 solely based on the fact that you have a professional espresso grinder.
The physical integration between the grinder and the tamper must match.
If you use a different grinder series, there are other PUQpress solutions, but they are not necessarily compatible with the M2 model we have in our assortment.
For a product in this price range, we therefore recommend that you verify compatibility before ordering.

Why integrate the tamper under the coffee grinder?
The biggest practical advantage is the workflow.
In a traditional setup, the process could, for example, be:
Grind → move portafilter → distribute coffee → move again → tamp → espresso machine
With an integrated tamper, grinding and tamping can be placed closer together.
This can provide:
-
less movement between workstations
-
less need for separate space for a tamper
-
consistent placement for tamping
-
less manual tamping throughout the workday
This is especially relevant in a high-volume coffee shop.
If you make a few espressos a day at home, the benefit is usually significantly less.
Automatic or manual tamper?
Both can be used for espresso.
Manual tamper
A manual espresso tamper is the simplest solution.
It is well-suited for:
-
home baristas
-
lower espresso consumption
-
setups with good counter space
-
you who want to control the tamping yourself
It requires no power and is far cheaper than an automatic solution.
Automatic tamper
An automatic PUQpress becomes particularly interesting with:
-
many espressos throughout the workday
-
multiple baristas at the same station
-
repetitive manual tamping movements
-
a desire for a more standardized workflow
-
a compatible professional coffee grinder
This does not mean that an automatic tamper automatically makes better espresso.
It primarily makes tamping more reproducible as a work process.
Coffee, grinder setting, dosage, distribution, and espresso recipe are still crucial.
Is PUQpress relevant for the home barista?
For most: no.
The PUQpress M2 is a specialized product for a specific setup.
A home barista who makes a couple of espressos a day will usually get far more value from prioritizing:
-
a good coffee grinder
-
an appropriate filter basket
-
a coffee scale
-
the correct size tamper
-
fresh coffee
See, for example, our selection of coffee scales, precision baskets, and tampers.
PUQpress only becomes obvious when the workflow and volume justify the automation.
PUQpress for cafés and business
In a coffee shop, the calculation changes.
When a tamper is used hundreds of times, the repetitive physical movement and the time per espresso become more relevant.
An automatic tamper can therefore be interesting as part of a professional bar setup.
The M2 is especially targeted at environments where a compatible Mythos grinder is already part of the workstation.
This means the product should be evaluated as part of the entire coffee shop's workflow – not just as a more expensive version of a hand tamper.
Does PUQpress produce better espresso?
Not automatically.
PUQpress can make the tamping itself more consistent from time to time, but the espresso still depends on many other factors.
Among others:
-
coffee beans
-
grind size
-
dose
-
the distribution of coffee in the filter basket
-
brewing ratios
-
temperature
-
filter basket
-
espresso machine
An automatic tamper cannot therefore compensate for, for example, an incorrect grinder setting.
It is more accurate to view PUQpress as a tool for workflow and reproducible tamping than as a shortcut to better espresso.
PUQpress and coffee distribution
Tamping and distribution are two different steps.
Tamping compresses the coffee bed.
Distribution is about how the ground coffee is distributed in the filter basket before tamping.
If you want to work with distribution before tamping, you can check out our WDT tool.
PUQpress does not necessarily replace a distribution step in your espresso workflow.
PUQpress and coffee scale
An automatic tamper also does not change the need to check the dosage.
If you want to work consistently with espresso, a coffee scale can be used to check both the amount of coffee and the finished weight of the espresso.
The more variables you keep stable, the easier it becomes to understand the effect of changes in grinder setting and recipe.
PUQpress only stabilizes one part of this process: the tamping.
58.3 mm – why the size is important
The M2 Gen 5 we carry has a 58.3 mm tamper.
This means the filter basket must fit this dimension.
A filter basket and tamper must work together with a sufficient fit so that the tamper can move correctly in the basket.
Therefore, always check:
-
the internal dimensions of the filter basket
-
the portafilter
-
the coffee grinder
-
the M2 compatibility
If you are also considering a different filter basket, you can see our selection of IMS precision baskets.
PUQpress is not a universal tamper
This is important.
The M2 should not be considered an automatic tamper that can just be placed under any coffee grinder.
PUQpress produces different models for different grinders and workstations.
The M2 is developed around the Mythos platform.
If you use a different coffee grinder, you must first investigate which PUQpress model fits that specific grinder.
We would rather help you check compatibility before purchase than sell a solution that does not fit your setup.

Frequently asked questions about PUQpress
What is PUQpress?
PUQpress is a series of automatic espresso tampers. The machine performs the tamping mechanically instead of the barista tamping manually.
What is the PUQpress M2?
The M2 is an integrated PUQpress model developed for compatible Mythos coffee grinders.
What size tamper does the model at Brændeholm Risteri have?
The current M2 Gen 5 model in our assortment has a tamper diameter of 58.3 mm.
Does the PUQpress M2 fit all coffee grinders?
No. The M2 is an integrated model developed around Mythos grinders. Always check compatibility before purchase.
Is PUQpress only for cafés?
Not necessarily, but the M2 is a specialized and expensive product that especially makes sense with higher espresso volume and a compatible professional setup.
Does PUQpress provide better espresso?
Not in itself. It can make the tamping more reproducible, but the espresso result also depends on coffee, grinding, dose, distribution, and brewing parameters.
Does PUQpress replace WDT?
No. WDT is used for distribution of the coffee before tamping, while PUQpress performs the tamping.
Do I need an automatic tamper at home?
Most home baristas do not. A manual tamper in the correct size is sufficient for the vast majority of home setups.
