Bialetti Moka Express 6 cups – classic Italian espresso maker

Brew intense and aromatic moka coffee with the Bialetti Moka Express 6 cups. Developed in Italy in 1933, this iconic espresso maker has since become a symbol of classic Italian coffee culture.

The characteristic octagonal shape helps distribute heat during brewing, while the aluminum construction makes the pot lightweight and quick to heat up. The six-cup size brews approximately 270 ml of concentrated coffee.

Six small Italian cups

Bialetti's indication of six cups is based on small Italian servings and does not correspond to six standard coffee mugs.

A brew of approximately 270 ml typically serves:

  • Six small servings

  • Two to three larger cups of moka coffee

  • Coffee for cappuccino or caffe latte

  • A strong base for iced coffee

  • Sharing among multiple people

The finished coffee can be enjoyed as is or combined with hot or cold milk foam.

Full-bodied moka coffee from the stove

A moka pot brews coffee using steam pressure. As the water in the bottom chamber heats up, it is forced through the ground coffee and into the top chamber of the pot.

The result is a full-bodied and concentrated coffee with more intensity than standard filter coffee.

The Moka Express does not brew espresso in the technical sense, as the pressure is lower than in an espresso machine. However, the taste and concentration make it well-suited as a simple alternative for espresso-based coffee drinks.

Made of aluminum in Italy

The Bialetti Moka Express is made of aluminum, which conducts heat effectively and helps the pot reach brewing temperature quickly.

The handle and knob are made of thermoplastic and provide a practical grip during serving. Bialetti's well-known "little man with the mustache" is embossed on the pot's top chamber.

How to brew with Bialetti Moka Express

  1. Fill the bottom chamber with cold or room-temperature water up to the safety valve.

  2. Place the filter funnel into the bottom chamber.

  3. Fill the funnel with coffee ground for a moka pot.

  4. Distribute the coffee evenly without tamping or pressing it.

  5. Remove any loose coffee from the rim of the pot.

  6. Screw the top and bottom sections tightly together.

  7. Place the pot on the stovetop over low to medium heat.

  8. Remove the pot from the heat once the coffee has risen and it begins to gurgle.

  9. Stir the coffee gently before serving, if desired.

Use a grind size finer than that for regular filter coffee, but coarser than for a traditional espresso machine.

Avoid tamping the coffee

The coffee should be distributed loosely and evenly in the filter funnel. It must not be pressed down as in a portafilter.

If the coffee is tamped or ground too finely, the water may have difficulty passing through the coffee bed. This can lead to slow and uneven brewing.

Suitable for several types of stovetops

The Bialetti Moka Express can be used on:

  • Gas stoves

  • Electric stovetops

  • Glass-ceramic stovetops

On gas stoves, the flame must be kept under the bottom of the pot so it does not go up the sides or hit the handle.

The traditional aluminum Moka Express cannot be used directly on induction. It can be used in combination with a compatible Bialetti induction adapter plate.

Bialetti's safety valve

The bottom chamber is equipped with Bialetti's safety valve. Water should not be filled higher than the valve, and the valve must be kept free of limescale and coffee residues.

Regularly check that the valve moves freely and that the filter, gasket, and threads are clean and undamaged.

Cleaning and maintenance

Let the pot cool down after brewing, then disassemble the parts. Remove the coffee grounds and rinse all parts thoroughly with warm or lukewarm water.

Bialetti recommends cleaning the Moka Express without dish soap. The pot must not be washed in the dishwasher, as this can damage the aluminum surface and affect the flavor of the coffee.

Let all parts dry completely separately before reassembling the pot. This reduces the risk of moisture, discoloration, and oxidation.

The gasket and filter plate should be checked regularly and replaced when they become worn or damaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much coffee does the Bialetti Moka Express 6 cups brew?

The pot brews approximately 270 ml of moka coffee. Bialetti's indication of six cups refers to small Italian servings and not standard coffee mugs.

Does Moka Express make real espresso?

Not in a technical sense. A moka pot operates at a lower pressure than an espresso machine, but it brews an intense and concentrated coffee that can be used as a base for cappuccino and caffe latte.

What coffee should I use?

Use coffee ground for a moka pot. The grind size should be finer than regular filter coffee but coarser than for a traditional espresso machine.

Should the coffee be tamped into the filter funnel?

No. The coffee should be distributed evenly without being tamped or pressed together.

Can Moka Express be used on induction?

Not directly. The pot is made of aluminum and therefore requires a separate induction adapter if used on an induction cooktop.

How high should the water be filled?

Fill the bottom chamber with water up to the level of the safety valve. The water must not cover or exceed the valve.

Can the Bialetti Moka Express be washed in the dishwasher?

No. The pot should be rinsed with water without dish soap. The dishwasher can damage the aluminum surface and affect the flavor of the coffee.

When is the coffee ready?

The coffee is ready when it has risen to the top chamber and the pot begins to gurgle. Remove it from the heat to avoid the coffee becoming unnecessarily bitter.
