Which Chemex brewers does the FP-2N fit?

Chemex FP-2N is developed for the smaller Chemex brewers.

The filter fits, among others:

• Chemex Classic 3-cup – CM-1C
• Chemex Handblown 3-cup – CM-1
• Chemex Glass Handle 3-cup – CM-1GH
• Chemex Funnex – CM-FNX

If you have a 6 or 8-cup Chemex, you must instead choose the larger Chemex filters for 6 cups and up.

FP-2N is a Half Moon filter

The FP-2N differs from the large square Chemex filters by its characteristic Half Moon shape.

The filter is delivered unfolded and must therefore be folded before being placed in the brewer.

When folded correctly, the filter forms a cone with several layers of paper on one side.

How to fold the Chemex FP-2N

1. Fold the filter in half
Fold the half-moon in two.

2. Fold the small semi-circular flap in
Fold the small part in toward the center.

3. Fold the filter in half again
Now the shape that opens into a cone is formed.

4. Open the filter
Open the filter so that there are three layers of paper on one side and one layer on the other.

5. Place the thickest side against the pouring spout
The side with three layers is placed against the pouring spout of the Chemex carafe.

The filter is then ready for coffee and brewing.

Why should three layers face the pouring spout?

The thicker side of the filter provides extra stability around the pouring spout.

It also helps keep the air path at the spout open during brewing, so the filter does not sit tightly against the glass and create a vacuum.

It is therefore important to orient the filter correctly when placing it in the Chemex carafe.

Natural or white Chemex filter?

CHEMEX produces both white and natural/brown filters.

Both types work according to the same basic principle.

The natural paper undergoes hot water baths and thus retains its natural brown paper color.

The white filter paper also undergoes an oxygen-based cleaning process.

The choice between white and natural is therefore largely a matter of personal preference.

Why use original Chemex filters?

The Chemex brewer and its filter are developed as a complete brewing system.

The CHEMEX Bonded filter paper is thicker than many ordinary coffee filters and helps retain fine coffee particles and some of the coffee oils during brewing.

Should the Chemex filter be rinsed before brewing?

It is a good idea to rinse the paper filter with hot water before brewing.

This has two practical benefits:

• the filter is moistened and sits correctly in the brewer
• the Chemex carafe is simultaneously preheated

Pour out the rinse water before adding the ground coffee.

Which grind size fits Chemex?

A medium-coarse grind size is a good starting point.

If the water runs very slowly through the filter, you can try a slightly coarser grind.

If the water runs too quickly, you can try grinding a little finer.

A good coffee grinder makes it easier to adjust the grind and repeat a brew you are satisfied with.

Can Chemex filters be composted?

Yes. CHEMEX states that their paper filters are compostable.

After brewing, the filter and coffee grounds can therefore be composted, if your local conditions and composting solution allow it.
