Chemex FS-100 – 100 white paper filters for Chemex 6–10 cups

Chemex FS-100 are the original white, pre-folded CHEMEX Bonded paper filters for larger Chemex brewers.

The package contains 100 filters that are ready to open and place directly into the brewer. They fit, among others, the Chemex Classic 6 and 8 cup brewers and are developed as a central component of the Chemex brewing system.

The thicker filter paper retains fine coffee particles and some of the coffee oils during brewing, contributing to the clean and clear cup of coffee for which Chemex is known.

Which Chemex models does the FS-100 fit?

The Chemex FS-100 is intended for Chemex brewers of 6 cups and larger.

This means, among others, that the filter fits:

• Chemex Classic 6 cups
• Chemex Classic 8 cups
• larger compatible Chemex models

If you have a Chemex 3 cup, you should not choose the FS-100. The smaller model uses the special FP-2 or FP-2N Half Moon filters.

What does FS-100 mean?

FS-100 is CHEMEX's product designation for the white, square, and pre-folded Bonded filters.

They are already folded from the factory, so you simply need to open the filter into a cone and place it correctly in the Chemex carafe.

This distinguishes them from, among other things, the smaller Half Moon filters for the Chemex 3 cup, which must be folded by hand before use.

How to place the Chemex filter correctly

When you open an FS-100 filter, you get a cone with:

three layers of paper on one side
and
one layer of paper on the other side.

Place the side with three layers against the Chemex carafe's pouring spout.

This gives the filter extra stability at the spout and simultaneously helps keep the air channel clear during brewing.

After this, you can add the freshly ground coffee and begin brewing.

Should the Chemex filter be rinsed before brewing?

It is a good idea to rinse the filter with hot water before brewing.

This ensures, among other things, that:

• the filter rests properly against the glass
• the Chemex carafe is preheated
• the filter paper is saturated before the coffee is added

Pour out the rinse water before you put the ground coffee into the filter.

Why does Chemex use special paper filters?

The CHEMEX Bonded filters are developed as part of the Chemex brewing system itself.

The filter paper is thicker than many ordinary coffee filters and retains both fine coffee particles and some of the coffee oils.

This helps give Chemex coffee a characteristic clean, clear, and light mouthfeel.

White or natural Chemex filter?

Chemex offers both white and natural/brown filters.

Both types function according to the same brewing principle and have the same basic purpose.

The difference lies primarily in the processing of the filter paper.

The white filters undergo an oxygen-based cleaning process followed by hot water baths.

The natural filters undergo hot water baths but retain the paper's natural brown color.

CHEMEX does not use chlorine bleach in the white filters.

The choice between white and natural is therefore largely a matter of personal preference.

FS-100 or FSU-100?

The two models are very similar:

FS-100

Which grind size fits Chemex?

A medium-coarse grind size is a good starting point for Chemex.

If the water runs very slowly through the filter, you can try grinding the coffee a little coarser.

If the water runs through very quickly, you can try a slightly finer grind size.

The taste is the most important benchmark, so adjust gradually according to the coffee and recipe you are using.

A good coffee grinder makes it easier to hit and repeat the desired grind size.

Can the Chemex filters be composted?

Yes. CHEMEX states that their Bonded paper filters are compostable.

After brewing, the filter and coffee grounds can therefore be composted if your local waste or composting scheme permits it.

Easy cleanup after brewing

When the coffee has finished brewing, you simply lift the filter out of the Chemex carafe along with the coffee grounds.

There is no separate filter holder or filter basket that needs to be cleaned.

Rinse the Chemex carafe, and it is ready for the next brew.
