The perfect Espresso Martini

Espresso Martini: the perfect blend of coffee and cocktail

Here at Brændeholm Risteri, we are passionate about coffee in all its forms – from the green beans we roast with care here on Funen, to the finished cup that kickstarts your morning or rounds off a good dinner. A rising star in the coffee world is the Espresso Martini, a drink that unites the deep aroma of coffee with the elegance of a cocktail. It has become a modern classic, loved for its balance between the bitter, the sweet, and the invigorating.

We understand the importance of quality coffee in a good Espresso Martini. You can have the best vodka and coffee liqueur, but without an excellent espresso, the drink falls flat. That is why we want to guide you on how to make the perfect Espresso Martini, and, of course, how our freshly roasted coffee is the secret ingredient.

An Espresso Martini is more than just a drink; it is a tribute to the versatility of coffee. It dates back to the 1980s and was reportedly created by bartender Dick Bradsell in London, when a customer asked for a drink that would "wake me up and then fuck me up." The result was this iconic cocktail that has since conquered bars all over the world. It is elegant, sophisticated, and surprisingly easy to make at home, especially when you have the right ingredients.

What is an Espresso Martini?

An Espresso Martini is a popular modern cocktail consisting of vodka, coffee liqueur, and, as the name suggests, freshly brewed espresso. It is typically served in a chilled martini glass, often garnished with a few coffee beans on top. It is known for its characteristic frothy head, which is achieved specifically by the vigorous shaking with ice. This drink is the perfect end to a dinner or as a late-night "pick-me-up."

When talking about an Espresso Martini, it is essential to highlight the role of the coffee. Not just any coffee will do. It requires high-quality espresso, preferably brewed from freshly ground beans. At Brændeholm Risteri, we roast freshly roasted coffee in small batches to ensure the optimal freshness and flavor, which are crucial for a perfect Espresso Martini.

The recipe for the best Espresso Martini

A good Espresso Martini requires good ingredients and precision. Here is our preferred recipe, which highlights the flavor of the coffee:

Ingredients for your Espresso Martini:

  • 5 cl good vodka

  • 3 cl coffee liqueur (e.g., Kahlúa or similar)

  • 3 cl freshly brewed espresso (important!)

  • 1 cl sugar syrup (optional or adjustable to taste)

  • Ice cubes

  • 3 whole coffee beans for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Brew your espresso: This is the most crucial step for your Espresso Martini. Brew your espresso shortly before serving, so it is fresh and still warm. We recommend our espresso beans, which are carefully selected for this purpose. Feel free to let it cool down slightly, but it should not be cold. A lukewarm espresso helps create that beautiful froth. Also, read our guide to better espresso here.

  2. Prepare the glass: Chill a martini glass. This can be done by putting it in the freezer for a few minutes or filling it with ice cubes and letting it sit while you mix the drink.

  3. Mix the ingredients: Pour the vodka, coffee liqueur, freshly brewed espresso, and sugar syrup (if you are using it) into a shaker with plenty of ice cubes.

  4. Shake vigorously: Close the shaker tightly and shake VERY vigorously for about 10-15 seconds. The goal is not only to mix and chill, but also to create that characteristic thick frothy head that an Espresso Martini is known for. The vigorous shaking is essential to emulsify the coffee oils and create a beautiful foam.

  5. Strain and serve: Strain the contents into your chilled martini glass. The beautiful frothy head will settle on top.

  6. Garnish: Garnish with the three whole coffee beans on the foam. They represent health, wealth, and happiness – or simply an aesthetic touch.

Voila! You now have a beautiful and tasty Espresso Martini, ready to be enjoyed.

The importance of good coffee in your Espresso Martini

As a coffee roastery, we know that coffee is the heart of an Espresso Martini. The quality of your espresso will determine how good your drink turns out. Here is why our coffee is the ideal choice:

  • Freshly roasted: We roast small batches of coffee here on Funen. This ensures that you always receive freshly roasted beans that still contain the full complexity of aroma and flavor.

  • Quality beans: We select our green coffee beans ourselves to ensure the highest quality, which provides a deeper and more nuanced flavor in your espresso.

  • Roast profile: We can offer different roast profiles – from light roast to dark roast. For an Espresso Martini, many prefer a medium to dark roast, as it provides a more intense coffee flavor that can stand up to the sweetness of the vodka and liqueur.

An Espresso Martini deserves an espresso that is just as good as your favorite cup of coffee. It is about choosing beans that can deliver the necessary intensity and aroma without becoming too bitter or acidic when mixed with the other ingredients.

Equipment that enhances your Espresso Martini experience

To brew the perfect espresso for your Espresso Martini, you need the right equipment. At Brændeholm Risteri, we offer a wide selection of coffee equipment that can help you:

Category

Use

Coffee grinder

Manual / Electric

Freshly ground beans

Espresso machine

Sage / Moka pot

Optimal espresso

Barista equipment

Tamper

Perfect puck

Scales

Timemore

Precise dosing

Investing in a good coffee grinder is, for example, crucial. Freshly ground beans release far more aromas than pre-ground ones, which directly affects the taste of your espresso and thus your Espresso Martini. We offer both electric and manual coffee grinders, so you can find the one that best suits your needs.

A good espresso machine is, of course, also a must, but a moka pot can also deliver a strong coffee that works in an Espresso Martini if you don't have an espresso machine. The most important thing is to achieve a concentrated and tasty coffee. Also, remember barista equipment like a tamper to press the coffee evenly in the portafilter, which is essential for good extraction.

Frequently asked questions about Espresso Martini

Why doesn't my Espresso Martini get a nice foam?

The most common reason for a lack of foam is insufficient shaking. You must shake the shaker very vigorously for at least 10-15 seconds. Furthermore, the espresso should be freshly brewed and preferably lukewarm; this helps create emulsification and a stable foam. Use plenty of ice, as this also contributes to the formation and consistency of the foam.

Can I use regular brewed coffee instead of espresso for an Espresso Martini?

Technically you can, but we do not recommend it. An Espresso Martini is best with espresso due to its concentrated flavor and creamy consistency, which is essential for the drink's balance and mouthfeel. Regular brewed coffee will typically be too thin and too diluted, which will result in a duller and less authentic Espresso Martini. If you don't have an espresso machine, a strong, concentrated coffee brewed in a moka pot can be a better alternative.

Which type of coffee beans is best for an Espresso Martini?

For an Espresso Martini, a dark- to medium-roast coffee is often preferable. These beans provide a full-bodied and intense coffee flavor with notes of chocolate and caramel, which complement the vodka and coffee liqueur without becoming too acidic. Here at Brændeholm Risteri, we have a selection of dark roast and medium roast beans that are perfectly suited for the purpose. Our espresso beans are specifically selected to provide optimal flavor and crema for your espresso.

Why should I garnish with 3 coffee beans on my Espresso Martini?

The tradition of garnishing an Espresso Martini with three coffee beans is said to originate from Italy, where they represent health, wealth, and happiness. Besides the symbolic meaning, they also add an aesthetic touch and a subtle aroma to the drink when you take a sip.

Can you make a decaffeinated Espresso Martini?

Yes, you absolutely can! Simply brew your espresso using decaffeinated coffee beans. This allows you to enjoy the delicious taste of an Espresso Martini without the invigorating caffeine content, which is ideal if you want to enjoy it in the evening. We can supply freshly roasted coffee without caffeine as well if you contact us.
