AeroPress

AeroPress coffee makers, filters, and accessories

AeroPress is a compact and versatile manual coffee maker where coffee and water steep together before the coffee is pressed through a paper or metal filter.

The brewing method combines immersion with filtration and allows you to adjust, among other things, the coffee amount, grind size, water temperature, and brew time.

This makes AeroPress interesting both for the beginner who wants a simple coffee maker and for the coffee enthusiast who wants to experiment with different recipes.

At Brændeholm Risteri, you will find AeroPress coffee makers, paper filters, reusable metal filters, spare parts, and accessories.

If you want to compare AeroPress with other brewing methods, you can see our complete selection of coffee makers.

Which AeroPress should I choose?

There are several AeroPress models, and the best model depends especially on:

  • How much coffee you usually brew
  • Whether the brewer is primarily used at home or on the go
  • Whether you prefer a transparent or classic design
  • Whether you want standard capacity or a larger model
  • Which materials and aesthetic you prefer

The various models are based on the same basic AeroPress principle, but size, materials, and design vary.

AeroPress Original

AeroPress Original is the classic model and a good starting point for most people.

It is compact, simple to use, and offers great freedom to work with different brewing recipes.

Original is an obvious choice if you want the traditional AeroPress experience and primarily brew smaller portions of coffee.

It uses standard-size AeroPress filters, which gives access to both paper filters and various reusable metal filters.

AeroPress Clear

AeroPress Clear is based on the same basic brewing method as the Original, but has a transparent brewing chamber.

This allows you to visually follow the coffee and water during brewing and gives the brewer a different design.

Clear is interesting if you like the classic AeroPress size but want a transparent and more colorful look.

AeroPress XL

AeroPress XL is the larger edition for those who want to brew more coffee at a time.

The brewing principle remains the same, but the larger capacity makes the XL more practical if one regular AeroPress brew is often too small.

It is important to be aware that the AeroPress XL uses larger filters than the standard models.

Filters for AeroPress Original and Clear therefore do not fit the XL.

AeroPress Premium

AeroPress Premium is for those who want the AeroPress principle in a more exclusive design.

The brewing method remains recognizable, but materials and design differ from the classic AeroPress models.

Premium is therefore especially interesting if the AeroPress is to have a more permanent place in the kitchen, and you value both function and material choice.

AeroPress Original or XL?

The biggest practical difference is capacity.

AeroPress Original is ideal for smaller portions and for those who want the classic, compact AeroPress.

AeroPress XL makes it possible to brew a larger amount of coffee in the same brew.

If you almost always make coffee for one person, the Original will often be sufficient.

If you often brew for several people or just want a larger portion, the XL can be more practical.

Remember that the two models use different filter sizes.

How does an AeroPress work?

AeroPress is a manual coffee maker.

The basic process is:

  1. A filter is placed in the filter holder.
  2. Ground coffee is added to the brewing chamber.
  3. Hot water is added.
  4. Coffee and water are allowed to stay in contact for the desired time.
  5. The plunger is pressed down slowly.
  6. The finished coffee passes through the filter and into the cup or serving carafe.

It sounds simple – and it is.

But because you control several brewing variables yourself, the same AeroPress can be used for very different coffee experiences.

AeroPress recipe – a good place to start

There are many different AeroPress recipes.

A simple starting point is:

15 g coffee
250 g water
Medium-fine grind size
Water around 85–95 °C
Total brew time around 2 minutes

This recipe is not a fixed rule.

It is a starting point, which you can subsequently adjust according to the coffee beans and your own taste.

In our AeroPress guide with recipe, dosage, and grind size, we go much deeper into the brewing and explain how to adjust the coffee if the result is not as desired.

Which grind size should I use for AeroPress?

A medium to medium-fine grind is a good starting point for many AeroPress recipes.

However, AeroPress is very flexible, and there are good recipes with both finer and coarser grind sizes.

The grind size must always be seen in relation to the brew time.

A finer grind provides a larger contact surface and can normally extract the coffee faster.

A coarser grind may require longer contact time.

If the coffee tastes thin, sharp, or lacks sweetness, a slightly finer grind size may be worth trying.

If the coffee seems very bitter, dry, or is difficult to press through, you can try grinding a bit coarser.

With your own coffee grinder, you can adjust the grind size from brew to brew and adapt it to the specific coffee.

Which coffee beans are best for AeroPress?

There is no single specific coffee bean that is best for AeroPress.

One of the brewer's strengths is precisely that you can use light, medium, and dark roasted coffee.

Light roasted coffee

Light roasted coffee beans can provide a more fruity and fresh AeroPress coffee, where the coffee's origin character stands out clearly.

If a light roasted coffee becomes very thin or sharp, you can, among other things, experiment with a finer grind, longer steeping time, or higher water temperature.

Medium roasted coffee

Medium roasted coffee beans are a versatile choice for AeroPress.

They can provide a good balance between sweetness, body, acidity, and the coffee's original character.

Dark roasted coffee

Dark roasted coffee beans can provide a stronger cup with more distinct roasting character and body.

If the coffee becomes too bitter or heavily roasted in taste, a slightly lower water temperature or shorter brew time may be worth trying.

You will find various origins and roast degrees among our freshly roasted coffee beans.

AeroPress paper filter or metal filter?

The filter affects the finished coffee.

There is no one filter that is objectively best. The choice depends on what type of coffee experience you prefer.

Paper filter

The paper filter retains many of the coffee's fine particles and a portion of the oils.

The result is typically a clean and clear cup with very little sediment.

The paper filter is also practical for cleaning because coffee grounds and filter can be pressed directly out after brewing.

You can, for example, use AeroPress paper filters – 350 pcs for compatible standard models.

Reusable metal filter

A reusable AeroPress metal filter can be washed and used again.

Metal filters differently than paper and normally lets more coffee oils and very fine particles pass through.

This can give a fuller mouthfeel and a different coffee experience.

The choice can therefore be simplified to:

Paper filter: cleaner and clearer cup.

Metal filter: more body and a filter that can be used again.

Which AeroPress filter fits my model?

It is important to choose the correct size.

AeroPress Original, Clear, and several other standard models use standard-size filters.

AeroPress XL uses larger XL filters.

A regular AeroPress filter therefore does not fit the AeroPress XL.

The same applies to reusable metal filters and other filter-related accessories.

Always check the product's compatibility with your AeroPress model before purchasing.

Can AeroPress make espresso?

AeroPress can make concentrated coffee in espresso-style, but it does not make traditional espresso.

An espresso machine works with a different construction and a significantly higher brewing pressure.

AeroPress, on the other hand, can use a high coffee dosage and a smaller amount of water to make a concentrated coffee, which can, for example, be:

  • Drunk as a short and intense coffee
  • Diluted with hot water
  • Used together with milk
  • Used as a base in cold coffee drinks

This can be practical if you want concentrated coffee without having a traditional espresso machine.

AeroPress for regular filter-like coffee

AeroPress does not need to be used for concentrated coffee.

With more water and an appropriate coffee dosage, you can make a lighter cup that is closer to what many associate with filter coffee.

It is precisely this flexibility that makes AeroPress interesting.

The same brewer can provide very different results by changing:

  • Coffee amount
  • Water amount
  • Grind size
  • Water temperature
  • Brew time
  • Filter type

AeroPress for travel, summer houses, and work

AeroPress is compact and does not require electricity in the brewer itself.

If you have access to hot water, you basically only need:

  • AeroPress
  • Filter
  • Coffee beans or ground coffee
  • Hot water
  • A solid cup or serving carafe

This makes AeroPress interesting for, for example:

  • The office
  • The summer house
  • Camping
  • Vacations
  • Travel
  • Small kitchens

If you also want to grind the coffee beans on the spot, a compact manual coffee grinder can be a practical supplement.

Accessories for AeroPress

You do not need much extra equipment to brew coffee with AeroPress.

A brewer, a compatible filter, coffee, and hot water are enough to get started.

However, there are a number of accessory products that can solve different needs.

These include, among others:

  • Paper filters
  • Reusable metal filters
  • Filter holders
  • Spare parts
  • Organizer Stand
  • Carafe
  • Thermal mug
  • Flow Control Filter Cap
  • Accessories for AeroPress XL

Extra equipment makes the most sense when it solves a specific problem or gives you a brewing option you actually want.

Flow Control Filter Cap

A Flow Control Filter Cap is developed to give greater control over when the coffee begins to run through the filter.

With the regular AeroPress method, a small amount of liquid can begin to drip through the filter before you press.

A Flow Control solution can limit this flow until the pressure from the plunger activates the outlet.

This allows for other brewing recipes and can be interesting if you want to work with longer immersion or more concentrated brews.

Compatibility varies between standard models and AeroPress XL, so always check which model the accessory is intended for.

AeroPress or French press?

AeroPress and French press have something in common.

With both methods, coffee and water have time to steep together.

The big difference lies in the filtration and the way the brewing is completed.

French press

A French press normally uses a metal filter.

This often provides more coffee oil and fine sediment in the cup and thus a fuller mouthfeel.

AeroPress

AeroPress is pressed through a paper or metal filter.

With a paper filter, the coffee typically becomes cleaner and with less sediment.

AeroPress is also particularly flexible for smaller portions and short experiments with different recipes.

If you want to see the other brewing method, you will find our French presses here.

AeroPress or Hario V60?

AeroPress and Hario V60 are both manual coffee makers, but they work differently.

Hario V60

V60 is a pour over brewer.

The water passes through the coffee bed during brewing, and pouring speed and water flow have a great impact on extraction.

AeroPress

AeroPress uses more immersion, where coffee and water get time together before the coffee is pressed through the filter.

This means that AeroPress is normally less dependent on a precise pouring technique.

V60, on the other hand, provides a great opportunity to work actively with water flow and pouring pattern.

If you want to try pour over, you can see our Hario V60 coffee makers and accessories.

AeroPress or Clever Dripper?

AeroPress and Clever Dripper both combine elements of immersion and filtration.

The difference lies especially in the completion of the brewing.

With AeroPress, the coffee is actively pressed through the filter with the plunger.

With the Clever Dripper, the valve is opened when the brewer is placed on the cup or server, after which the coffee runs through the filter by means of gravity.

Both methods can be good choices if you want more control over the steeping time without being as dependent on pouring technique as with traditional pour over.

See our Clever Dripper coffee makers.

Should you use the inverted method with AeroPress?

The inverted method means that the AeroPress is turned upside down during the steeping time.

The method became popular because it prevents the coffee from dripping through the filter before pressing.

However, the AeroPress stands less stable in this position while the brewing chamber contains hot water.

We therefore recommend the regular method.

If you want a longer steeping time with less throughput, you can, among other things, carefully set the plunger a little bit into the top of the brewing chamber after stirring. This can create a seal that reduces dripping.

How fast should you press an AeroPress?

Press the plunger slowly and in a controlled manner.

You do not need to use great force.

If the AeroPress is very difficult to press, the coffee may be ground too fine, or the filter may be clogged by many very fine coffee particles.

Do not try to solve it by pressing harder.

Try instead a slightly coarser grind size at the next brew.

Easy cleaning after brewing

One of AeroPress' practical characteristics is the simple cleaning.

After brewing, the filter holder can be unscrewed, after which the coffee puck and filter are pressed out.

The relevant parts can then be rinsed and prepared for the next brew.

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific AeroPress model and the accessories you are using.

Spare parts can extend the brewer's life

Several parts for AeroPress can be purchased separately.

If, for example, the filter holder or the rubber plunger becomes damaged or worn, it does not necessarily mean that the entire coffee maker needs to be replaced.

In our AeroPress assortment, you will find brewers, filters, spare parts, and various accessories gathered in one place.

AeroPress at Brændeholm Risteri

At Brændeholm Risteri, we work with coffee beans, roasting, brewing methods, and coffee equipment.

AeroPress is one of the most flexible manual brewing methods because you can change many variables without needing a large coffee setup.

If you are new to AeroPress, we recommend starting simple:

Choose a coffee, use a fixed recipe, weigh your coffee and water, and then change only one variable at a time.

This makes it easier to understand what actually changes the taste.

When you are ready for the brewing process itself, you can use our guide to better coffee with AeroPress.
