How much coffee does the Moka Express Black 6 cups make?

Bialetti specifies a capacity of approximately 250 ml of brewed coffee.

The term 6 cups does not refer to six standard mugs. Bialetti's size rating is based on small moka/espresso cups.

Moka pot coffee is also more concentrated than regular drip coffee.

The 6-cup model is a great fit if you:

  • brew for several people
  • want a larger portion for yourself
  • want to make several milk-based coffee drinks
  • find that the 3- or 4-cup models are too small

Black Moka Express – classic shape, different look

The black Moka Express is built on the same recognisable base as the classic Moka Express, but features a black finish that gives the pot a more modern look.

You get the traditional octagonal aluminium construction in a variant that stands out visually from the classic silver Moka Express.

Does Moka Express brew real espresso?

Even though the Moka Express is often called an espresso maker, it does not brew traditional espresso like an espresso machine.

When water is heated in the bottom chamber, pressure builds up, pushing the water through the ground coffee and into the top chamber.

The result is an intense and concentrated moka pot coffee, but it is brewed at a lower pressure than classic espresso.

If you want to work with dosage, grind size, and brewing technique, you can read our guide to coffee on moka pots and espresso makers.

Can the Moka Express Black 6 cups be used on induction?

Not directly.

The Moka Express Black is made of aluminium and is therefore not inherently compatible with induction cooktops.

If you have an induction stove, you can use the Bialetti Induction Plate 13 cm.

The induction plate is placed on the cooktop, and the Moka Express is placed on top. The plate is heated by the induction field and transfers the heat to the aluminium pot.

If you are looking for a moka pot that can be used directly on induction, you can see our espresso makers and moka pots.

What grind size should be used?

A medium-fine grind is a good starting point for the Moka Express.

The coffee should be:

  • finer than regular drip coffee
  • coarser than traditional espresso
  • distinctly gritty rather than powder-fine

Fill the filter funnel loosely and evenly with coffee.

Do not tamp the coffee.

If the brewing process is very slow or the coffee becomes bitter, you can try a slightly coarser grind.

If the result is thin, you can try a slightly finer grind.

A good coffee grinder makes it easier to find and replicate the grind size that works best.

How to use your Bialetti Moka Express Black 6 cups

1. Fill the bottom chamber with water
Fill with water to just below the safety valve.

2. Insert the filter funnel
Place the filter funnel into the bottom chamber.

3. Add coffee
Fill the funnel loosely with medium-fine ground coffee.

Do not tamp the coffee.

4. Screw the moka pot together
Screw the top and bottom sections together securely.

Avoid using the handle as leverage when tightening or loosening the pot.

5. Place the pot on the stove
Use low to medium heat.

On gas, the flame should not extend up the sides of the pot.

If using induction, place the Bialetti Induction Plate 13 cm between the cooktop and the Moka Express.

6. Remove the pot from the heat
Once the coffee has reached the top chamber, remove the moka pot from the heat.

Avoid letting the coffee boil or sputter for too long.

Which coffee beans are suitable for the Moka Express?

You can use different roast levels.

Medium-roast coffee beans are a good all-round choice if you want a balance between sweetness, body, and the coffee's character.

If you prefer a stronger and more classic flavour profile, you can try dark-roast coffee beans.

Lighter roasts can also be used if you prefer more fruitiness and acidity.

Moka Express Black 3 or 6 cups?

The black Moka Express is available in several sizes.

Moka Express Black 3 cups
Approx. 130 ml – compact size for a smaller portion.

Moka Express Black 6 cups
Approx. 250 ml – larger portion and better if you are brewing for more people.

Both are based on the same classic Moka Express principle, so the choice primarily depends on the amount of coffee you normally want to brew.

Cleaning the Moka Express Black

Let the moka pot cool down after brewing.

Unscrew the parts, remove the coffee grounds, and wash the parts in warm water.

The Bialetti Moka Express Black must not be washed in a dishwasher.

Let the parts dry completely before reassembling the pot.

Regularly check the:

  • gasket
  • filter
  • safety valve
  • coffee outlet in the top chamber

to ensure coffee residues do not accumulate.

Before first use

Wash all parts in warm water before using the moka pot for the first time.

Bialetti also recommends that you discard the first three brews before using the pot for coffee intended to be consumed.
