Coffee makers

Coffee brewers – find the brewing method that suits you

The right coffee brewer depends on how you want your coffee to taste, how much control you want over the brewing process, and how many cups you typically make at a time.

At Brændeholm Risteri, you will find coffee brewers for several different brewing methods – from simple French press and classic drip coffee to pour over, AeroPress, cold brew, and stovetop espresso makers.

If you are unsure which brewing method to choose, we are here to help you understand the differences.

If you want to see the entire selection in one place, you can find the coffee brewers on this page. If you want to go directly to a specific brewing method, you can choose one of the categories below.

Which coffee brewer should I choose?

There is no single coffee brewer that is best for everyone.

Some brewing methods give you a lot of control over the grind size, water temperature, and pouring technique, while others are simpler and require less work.

If you like to experiment with brewing, pour over or AeroPress are obvious choices. If you prefer simplicity, a French press or a drip coffee machine might be more practical.

If you want a stronger and more concentrated coffee, a stovetop espresso maker could be interesting.

AeroPress – compact and versatile coffee brewer

AeroPress is a manual coffee brewer where coffee and water steep together before the coffee is pressed through a filter.

One of the advantages of the AeroPress is its flexibility. You can change the coffee amount, grind size, water temperature, and brew time, allowing you to experiment with very different recipes.

At the same time, the AeroPress takes up relatively little space, making it popular at home, in the office, and while traveling.

It is a great choice if you want a coffee brewer that offers the opportunity to experiment without requiring a large setup.

Hario V60 – pour over with high control

Hario V60 is one of the most well-known pour over brewers.

Here, water is poured manually over the ground coffee, and you control things like pouring speed, temperature, coffee amount, and grind size.

This makes the V60 interesting if you want to actively work with your brewing and experience how small changes affect the coffee.

The V60 is available in different sizes and materials, and both drippers, carafes, and paper filters exist for the system.

Chemex – pour over for one or more cups

Chemex combines a coffee brewer and a serving carafe in one design.

The coffee is brewed manually through a paper filter, and this brewing method is particularly interesting if you prefer drip coffee and want to brew multiple cups at a time.

Chemex comes in different sizes, so it can be used both for smaller batches and for coffee for several people.

Just like with other pour over methods, the grind size, dosage, and pouring technique affect the result.

Clever Dripper – combines immersion and filter coffee

Clever Dripper is interesting if you want a filter brewer where the pouring technique itself matters less.

The coffee is allowed to steep with the water, after which the brewer opens and allows the coffee to run through the filter when placed on a cup or carafe.

This makes the Clever Dripper a good compromise between the simple brewing of a French press and the filtered cup of a pour over.

Hario Switch – V60 with immersion

Hario Switch combines the V60 system with a valve that makes it possible to hold the water back in the brewer.

You can thus let the coffee and water steep together and then open the valve, or work with recipes that combine immersion and classic pour over.

This makes the Switch interesting if you like the V60 but want more opportunities to experiment with the brewing method.

French press – simple brewing with good body

A French press is one of the simplest manual methods for brewing coffee.

The ground coffee is mixed directly with the water and allowed to steep before the plunger is pressed down.

Because the coffee is not filtered through paper, you get a different cup profile than with, for example, the V60 or Chemex.

The French press is especially practical if you want to brew several cups without having to stand and pour water manually during the entire brewing process.

Stovetop espresso maker and moka pot – strong coffee on the stove

A stovetop espresso maker or moka pot brews coffee using the pressure that builds up when the water in the lower part of the pot is heated.

The result is a concentrated coffee with more intensity than traditional drip coffee.

A moka pot does not make espresso in the same way as a traditional espresso machine, but it is a great choice if you want a strong coffee and a simple brewer for the stovetop.

Be aware of your stove type when choosing a moka pot. Not all models work on induction.

Cold brew – coffee brewed cold over a longer period

With a cold brew coffee brewer, coffee is brewed with cold or room-temperature water over a significantly longer time than with hot coffee brewing.

The result can be drunk cold straight or used as a base for various cold coffee drinks.

Cold brew is therefore particularly interesting in the warmer months or for those who like to have cold-brewed coffee ready in the fridge.

Drip coffee machines – when brewing should be simple

If you want to be able to start a brew without controlling the pour yourself, a drip coffee machine can be the obvious choice.

Here, the machine takes care of the water flow, so you mainly need to concentrate on the coffee amount, grind size, and water.

A good drip coffee machine is especially practical if you often brew several cups at once.

Origami and other pour over brewers

If you want to explore more manual filter methods, you can also see our selection of Origami coffee brewers and accessories.

Different pour over brewers have different geometries, filters, and flow properties, and this provides the opportunity to experiment with the coffee's extraction and flavor profile.

This does not necessarily mean that one brewer is better than another. The best solution is the one that fits the way you want to brew coffee.

The coffee grinder is at least as important as the coffee brewer

The choice of coffee brewer is only one part of the brewing process.

The grind size has a major impact on how quickly the water extracts coffee, and different brewing methods require different grind sizes.

With your own coffee grinder, you can grind the coffee beans close to the brewing time and adjust the grind to the brewer you are using.

If you want to improve your coffee setup, a good grinder is therefore often at least as important as buying yet another coffee brewer.

Use a coffee scale for more consistent brewing

A coffee scale makes it easier to use the same amount of coffee and water from time to time.

This is especially useful when you are trying to figure out why one brew tastes different from the next.

When the coffee amount and water amount are known, it becomes easier to adjust, for example, the grind size, temperature, and brew time systematically.

You don't need to make coffee brewing complicated, but a little more precision makes it easier to repeat a cup you are satisfied with.

Kettle for pour over

For pour over, a kettle with a gooseneck spout can make it easier to control how quickly and precisely the water is poured over the coffee.

This is especially relevant for brewers like V60, Chemex, and Origami, where the pour itself is a part of the brewing process.

For French press, AeroPress, and many other brewing methods, precise pouring is less critical.

Which coffee beans suit my coffee brewer?

You can use many different coffee beans in the same coffee brewer.

The brewing method does not solely determine which coffee you should choose.

A lighter roast, for example, can give more room for fruitiness and clear origin character, while medium and darker roasts typically move towards more body and roast character.

The most important thing is to choose coffee according to the taste you prefer yourself and then adapt the grind size and brewing accordingly.

See our selection of freshly roasted coffee and coffee beans if you need coffee for your brewer.

Start simple and build from there

You don't need a large selection of coffee equipment to get started.

A coffee brewer, a suitable coffee grinder, a scale, and good coffee beans are a really good starting point.

Once you have learned to know your brewing method, it also becomes easier to assess which extra equipment can actually make a difference for you.

If you need help with the brewing process itself, you can find recipes and guidance in our brewing guides for coffee.

Frequently asked questions about coffee brewers

Which coffee brewer is the best?

There is no one coffee brewer that is best for everyone. V60 and other pour over brewers give a lot of control, AeroPress is compact and flexible, the French press is simple, and a drip coffee machine is practical when you want to brew multiple cups without manual pouring.

Which coffee brewer is best for beginners?

If simplicity is most important, a French press, Clever Dripper, or drip coffee machine can be good places to start. If you want to learn more about manual brewing, AeroPress and V60 are also good options.

What do I need for pour over?

At a minimum, you need a pour over brewer, a suitable filter, coffee, and hot water. A coffee grinder, coffee scale, and a kettle with a gooseneck spout make it easier to work more precisely.

Is AeroPress a filter coffee brewer?

AeroPress uses a filter, but the brewing method differs from traditional pour over. Coffee and water are in contact with each other before the brew is pressed through the filter.

Is a moka pot the same as an espresso machine?

No. A moka pot brews concentrated coffee on the stove, but it does not work in the same way as a traditional espresso machine.

Should I buy a coffee grinder together with the coffee brewer?

It is not a requirement, but a coffee grinder gives you the opportunity to grind the beans close to the brewing time and adapt the grind size to your coffee brewer.

Which coffee brewer is best for multiple cups?

It depends on the quantity, but larger Chemex models, French presses, and drip coffee machines are among the practical options if you regularly brew coffee for several people.

Can I use the same coffee beans in different coffee brewers?

Yes. The same coffee can be brewed with several different methods, but you will typically need to change the grind size and possibly the dosage and brew time.

A coffee brewer, a suitable coffee grinder, a scale, and good coffee beans are a really good starting point.

Once you have learned to know your brewing method, it also becomes easier to assess which extra equipment can actually make a difference for you.
